Rant - These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray

I'm still in a partial state of denial, but right after after thanksgiving, I'm relocating to NYC. While I'm excited about a new life on the east coast, I'm sad about leaving my friends and the Ocean Beach Surf. Surfing here has become a big part of my life.

Most of you know that I'm the StokeReport creator and maintainer. I plan to continue running the site, even thought I won't be able to contribute reports. It would be fantastic if someone (or a few of you) could step up with a regular SFOB report.

Keep the stoke going, I'm sure I'll be checking in every day, on the west coast conditions. I might even post a few reports from the other side of the country.

Suboptimal. Can we get the gang together, put on a show in the garage and raise money to keep you here: Little Rascals style ?

Thanks for the site and all of your reports. What's your surf plan? There are some good surfers out there so I assume there are waves too.

@kok: lol

As for the surf plan, I'd appreciate any advice on the surf options out there. I'm planning to live in Brooklyn.

Must be a damn good job you're following out there. I love NYC, but the Rent is Too Damn High.

Duckdive - thanks for all the hard work, stokereport is one of a kind! I lived in NYC for 12 years before moving out here in March so if you need info I will tell all. The surf out there can be pretty freaking' good - you just gotta be on it and brave the winters. Kooks galore at Rockaway beach so I suggest getting some wheels and traveling out to Lido beach or north Jersey. Check out nynjsurf.com for chatter. Btw, NS3 stands for 'not so secret spot', beach 90th street in queens (rock rock Rockaway beach!). Yeah that's right, I'll blow that shit up!

Long Island Strokereport. Figure out how to bifurcate the site.

@kingofkooks - Sorry, there ain't no surf in Coney Island. But still, this guy Balaram Stack from Long Beach could show you a thing or two:

I think the dude in the ambulance with the clinky bottles is kindly offering to drive his new friends, the Warriors, from Coney Island to a sweet Long Island a-frame sandbar. His rig can accomodate many boards. Hey! Ho! Let's Go!

Oh bugger. Thanks for getting this started here. Yeah, take a lesson from craigslist and crank out another locale. Well I'll ping when we head back to LBI.

Thanks for all your hard work. I've met a lot of great people through this site and shared stoke on a lot of great waves. None of that would have been possible without your efforts.

Best of luck over there. Many happy waves and a great new job to you!

thumbs down, that is sub optimal news. SR has become a daily fixation for me and most of the kooks I know - thank you.

Looks like Mollusk opened up a Brooklyn site, perhaps you can wake surf the Hudson? It can't be any dirtier than SM-LM after a storm...

Here's to one more night at the Fireside so we can say goodbye.

SR has put lots of really cool people in my life, as well as some exciting drama*. I think I can speak for near everyone when I say I am very grateful :)

Ditto the above. Thanks DD for having the vision for the SR concept, and for putting in the hard work into building and maintaining it. As a relative newbie to the site, I've got to say it's really impressive how well you've cultivated the stoke.

"I hear the East river has some pretty hot waves!"

Thanks for inventing this place. I only stumbled into it relatively recently and appreciate all the reports and rants.

NYC is fun! That fun factor can almost offset the lack of OB being around. Spent a chunk of my childhood years there and still go back to visit friends and family. If only I can take Manhattan island and move it somewhere on the Pacific coastline...

Duck to the Dive-

Props for your work on this site.

I was born and raised in NYC and after 5 winters here in SF I (mostly) transitioned back there in April. I now spend about 60% of my time in NYC. I am not sure if you and I have ever met at OB but give me a shout and we can connect for some missions when the Nor'easters are churning. But get some 7 mm booties if you've not already.

Aloha,
Phyfediggity

PS here's my report from SFOB, yesterday afternoon:2-4pm, before the storm front came through, bumpy/chunky/slopey1.5 OH on the outer bars. Plenty fun and I shared a peak solo with a Boricua transplant to Marin.

Thanks for all your hard work and perseverance, I'm sure you had to put up with a lot of shit to keep this site going and many (including me) appreciate what you have done (except for my boss because some day Stoke Report kills my productivity).

My buddy used to live in Brooklyn at Flatbush and 6th Ave. and it took him around 30-50 minutes depending on traffic to get to Long Beach, NY which is nice spot to surf and for the family (Take NY 878 past JFK to get to the beach). Gilgo Beach is another descent spot. Generally the further East you go the bigger the waves.

Best of luck to you John on the "Other Coast." This is by far the most mature, most of the time, surf site I have come across. Keep the Stoke and give them the same you have been giving us on the "Best Coast." Be sure to let us know when you're coming back for a visit.

Head 2 hrs south to States Street in Atlantic City...couple piers south of there in Margate NJ. You wont be sorry...if you hit the hurricane swells. Heritage surf shops in S. Jersey can also hook You up. Best luck, peace and hang loose.
