INFORMATION ONLY AT THIS TIME.

THIS BULLETIN IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. ONLY
NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE
DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA AND
ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

COORDINATES - 12.7 NORTH 88.5 WEST
DEPTH - 54 KM
LOCATION - OFF COAST OF CENTRAL AMERICA
MAGNITUDE - 7.3

EVALUATION

IT IS NOT KNOWN THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS WARNING IS
BASED ONLY ON THE EARTHQUAKE EVALUATION. AN EARTHQUAKE OF THIS
SIZE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI THAT CAN
STRIKE COASTLINES IN THE REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER WITHIN MINUTES
TO HOURS. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE
ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE
TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL GAUGES NEAREST THE REGION AND REPORT IF ANY
TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED. THE WARNING WILL NOT EXPAND
TO OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC UNLESS ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED
TO WARRANT SUCH AN EXPANSION.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

I was one of the idiots (to no one's surprise) that went out at a certain left point on that surging Tsunami day when the tide jumped from a negative to a +7 ft in about 15 minutes. Rangers had locked the fence, but said we could hop it at our own risk. All was well and as i sat cautiously in the channel.....a sweeper came in like none other than I'd ever seen :(

I ditched the board, swam to the bottom, and got the Eff outta there! There was no duck diving that shit. I hadn't seen the news that morning of the tragic carnage that had been ensuing on the poor folks of Japan. Maybe if I did, i think i would have used better judgement that day, and sat on the cliffs with the rest of the sound minded individuals.

Any one else have a Tsunami story or rogue wave incident? Always interesting to hear

Tsunami story #2. Pulled up to the dirt lot across the street from HMB Jetty at 9:00 AM... Dudes next to me in beat up truck were smoking weed and drinking Mikes Hard Lemonade... I left because I felt a strong possibility of a Darwin award opportunity.

I took my first surfing lesson less than a week after the Japanese earthquake and Tsunami. I was visiting family in LA and rolled out to Santa Monica to meet up with the instructor, who told me he admired my craziness at insisting to go out while the waves were "larger than we would normally take beginners out on" (being a strong open water swimmer was apparently the key to opening the risky business door) I got tossed around pretty good in waves that I probably had no business being out in, and learned how taxing it is to turtle roll a foam-top under sets that were 4 deep with very little spacing in-between. Fun times were had by all :)
