TSUNAMI WARNING in effect (what now?)

118

Anyone worried about the Tsunami on its way? We've got until 12:40ish...
shred it? or run to the hills? (maybe move your boat).................................... I'm hoping to see this thing swathsh into the bay (although i'm not sure if its possible to see, or big enough not to want to be on at the waters edge) Any suggestions or plans?

also, not sure if this is a report or rant...The tsunami is being reported but i am also asking about non-surfing activities

Do they have any idea how big it will be?

I found something that said there was a possibility for a 6 to 8 foot wave to hit hawaii's coast...not sure what is predicted for CA

here's more:

Here is the NWS advisory:

PEOPLE ARE ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACHES AND MARINAS. WAVE HEIGHTS AND CURRENTS ARE AMPLIFIED BY IRREGULAR SHORELINES AND ARE DIFFICULT TO PREDICT.

MINOR WAVE FLUCTUATIONS TWO FEET OR LESS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIMES LISTED BELOW: PORT SAN LUIS HARBOR...AT 1235 PM PST. SANTA BARBARA HARBOR...AT 1231 PM PST. SANTA MONICA HARBOR....AT 1225 PM PST. SAN PEDRO HARBOR.......AT 1215 PM PST.

THESE MINOR WAVE FLUCTUATIONS COULD CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. MARINERS IN WATER DEEPER THAN 600 FEET SHOULD NOT BE AFFECTED BY THE TSUNAMI.

I thought it was an advisory! I was perfectly happy being advised, and now I'm being warned?

If you are on Twitter, follow @SaveTheWaves for updated info. They have a lot of people down in Chile and have a lot of current info, like a recent tweet that says a 15 meter (meter!!!) tsunami just hit the Juan Fernandez islands.

This DART buoy
Station 43412 - 240 NM Southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico

Measured a 7 cm tsunami with a period of around 25 minutes. Expect arrival times at the beach to be earlier than the posted time for SF. Also, south facing beaches like Pt. Reyes will be the most likely to see noticeable sea level changes. Currents through the Golden Gate will also be pretty funky.

I doubt if it's gonna have much of an effect here. The coastline here is almost parallel to the direction of origin of the tsunami. As a result, the flux density of the wave hitting the coast will be low.

Sorry to rain on the parade. I'd like to experience a medium sized tsunami.

Regardless of what size it might be, we're dealing with a disorganized, mixed up surf with storm conditions. Adding in another variable makes it unsafe enough to warrant keeping an eye on conditions.

Tsunami' closes San Mateo County beaches
But it will be a small tsunami, estimated at 3.3 feet in Half Moon Bay

Share
San Mateo County beaches have been closed due to a tsunami advisory for the West Coast this afternoon resulting from a series of earthquakes that struck off the coast of Chile overnight.

A tsunami producing strong currents and a series of potentially dangerous waves is expected to hit the Bay Area coast at about 1:26 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Marin County beaches have also been closed as a precaution.

Strong currents and waves up to 3.3 feet in Half Moon Bay and 1.6 feet in Pacifica have prompted San Mateo County officials to close beaches in the area, and residents are advised to stay out of the water and away from the coast, San Mateo County sheriff's Lt. Ray Lunny said.

In Marin County, Stinson and ######es have been closed as a result of the tsunami advisory, according to the Marin County Sheriff's
Office of Emergency Services.
