Rant - Tyler Warren in Spain

Part surf contest, all around good time, the Duct Tape Invitational in Las Salinas, Spain, seems like a great excuse to gather some of the world's finest longboarders. "This year Salinas left me completely stoked," wrote filmmaker Jan Latussek. "So I decided to fish out an edit I made from last year's fest--" a compilation of Tyler Warren's unflinching stylings aboard his red single fin.

The vid was nothing really too special...more interested in why it hasn't appeared where it's supposed to. Pics?...sure, no probs, as long as they're go-pro gyrating butt wiggler shots...wanna look stylish...you know?

Go surfing? That's a novel idea...I'll have to try it some time:)

I'd vote you guys up but now the thumber isn't working, sheesh.

Longboarding is just so easy compared to contemporary shortboarding. I could make a film like this, with all the appropriate wiggles, the semi-drop-kneee turns, the allusions to Skip Frye's parallel stance, etc., because it's easy. But I can't even do 15% of the stuff that contemporary pros do on shortboards, because it's really freakin' hard. Not saying one is better than the other, but is certainly a lot easier to be a neo-retro logger than a good shortboarder.

Hello Tenderloin Tom, do you ever go to the Golden Era restaurant? I believe that's in your neck of the woods.

I don't know @madpie, it's a tough comparison to make on any level. Cross stepping, drop knee turns, tip riding and putting it all together with a smooth flow that stays in sync with the wave requires in my opinion a high degree of skill and practice. It's probably not as gymnastically athletic as short boarding with high speed roundhouse cutbacks and functional airs so could probably be seen as "easier" but it seems really skilled surfers are pretty good at both styles. "Retro style"?...well, don't get me started on leashless hipster clones.

eh, I'm not trying to say I'm some great longboarder. I'm just saying that cross stepping is easy and that "soulful style," as it is defined in longboard culture and demonstrated in this film, consists basically of moving your body the same way people did circa 1964, except while using a much lighter and more forigiving surfboard. Surfing like Kelly or Dane, by contrast, is mind-bogglingly difficult, dangerous, athletic, and so forth. (This was a dumb fight to pick on my part. Let's assume I was just tired when I posted the original comment, which was the case.)
