Video: Lisbon surfers go to town on ferry wave

1437

A restricted group of local surfers from Lisbon has been surfing a wave in a very unusual place with a very particular aspect. The wave is formed by a boat, actually a ferry-catamaran! And according to them the boat of the 8.20 am is the fastest one producing the biggest wave.

The waves are caught on the river Tagus, and some of the surfers are already studying the tides and winds to get the most from the energy that these boats produce when passing close to the shores. The video’s language is Portuguese but we are sure it will be very easy to understand!!

Chuck (red-haired) and Todd ("odd"), both from Bolinas, used to get good rides from the Larkspur Ferry's wave. Maybe they still do. Longboards, of course.

When the original Larkspur ferry boats first went into service they used to throw a much bigger wake and a huge rooster tail from the jets. They got the original design wrong and the jets shot half the water in the air. After a few years they sent the boats back to the shipyards to fix the problem, now they only throw a wake about half the size.

I lived in lisbon for a year. The Tagus river is so gross, it runs all the way from spain and smells like shit. The place that these guys are surfing is across the river from lisbon. There are plenty of decent places to surf real waves in much cleaner water 20 minutes outside of lisbon.

And here's a tip, dawn patrol doesn't exist in Portugal... They like to sleep in.
