Vote for the Plover!

2599

Voting has begun for environmental conservancy group Audubon California's 2011 Bird of the Year, which recognizes a California bird species that has made a significant impact this year.

The Bird of the Year highlights the state's birds and conservation challenges. Last year the Barn Owl won the title; the Yellow-billed Magpie earned the designation in 2009. The public may vote for any bird to be recognized for the conservation challenges it faces.

Audubon California has nominated seven species to consider: the California Condor, Golden Eagle, Western Snowy Plover, Tricolored Blackbird, Sandhill Crane, Vaux's Swift and Black Oystercatcher.

"Each of these birds was a major focus of conservation in 2011, although not all in the same way," said Audubon California executive director Dan Taylor in a statement Friday. "Moreover, each bird made news, and to some extent rallied the support of the public."

Anyone can cast their vote for their bird of choice through Dec. 11 at www.ca.audubon.org.

I noticed in the nice summary the Ocean Beach Bulletin did on the RipCurl contest, the only significant issue appears to have been our bodysurfing friends setting up their StokaPalooza contest in ploverland. Oooops.

George Durgerian, park ranger for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
The only issue we had was people got together and had a bodysurfing competition at Linnnncollln Way, and the problem we have with that is that Rip Curl has been great at keeping out of the wildlife area, but those guys just came up right in the middle of where the plovers happen to be right now, as they’re on their way up north along the beach. We believe that there was some disruption there, for sure, and we’re disappointed with that. We all believe that surfing and bodysurfing are very low-impact sports, but even then we try to keep them out of the plover areas. We want them to come back, and we welcome bodysurfing competitions, and we’re happy to have them, but we want to go through the parks service to make sure that they don’t disrupt the wildlife

They did not seek a permit, and we would not have permitted them anyway, because we never issue permits for anything down at that part of the beach.
