‘The Wave’: Susan Casey on Chasing Watery Monsters

1543

Journalist Susan Casey, a former member of the Canadian national swim team, has written about everything from hunting to chasing great white sharks. Her latest endeavors hardly undermine her reputation as an adrenaline junkie: Her new book, “The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks and Giants of the Ocean,” charts her forays into the ocean to chase the kind of monster waves that can swallow entire ships. And in a move that some might view as even more terrifying, she accepted the reins of O Magazine, where she has been Editor-in-Chief for the past year.

In her research for “The Wave,” she shadowed a gang of world-class surfers who were bent on riding a 100-foot wave.

I read her book Devil's Teeth, ostensibly about the Farallon Islands. Turned out it was mostly about her, and she turned out to a bit of a train wreck. I wonder if Laird and Gabby are now in marriage counseling.

best section from Devil's Teeth

In the bestselling book "Devil's Teeth" about biologists who study Great White Sharks in the Farallon Islands off of San Francisco, a rugged scientist who "had hitchhiked through some of the most desolate places imaginable - Nicaraguan jungles, Indian slums, Samoan fruit bat colonies - (was) asked to name the least likeable place he'd seen in the world.

He instantly pointed to an affluent California suburb: "Walnut Creek. No question.""

I've never been to Walnut Creek, but will be visiting next month for a swim meet.

What's the matter with it? Gentrified snobbery?

I just bought this book and will start reading it soon.

@Gander is right about the Devil's Teeth. She does seem like a bit of a loon. Reviewed it here: http://thewatermanslibrary.com/Site/DevilsTeeth.html

Regarding Walnut Creek, it's no more or less offensive than any other fabricated California suburb. It's reminiscent of many Orange County developments. If you have to spend the night, like we did for a soccer tournament, the best choice is the Renaissance Sport Hotel. Nice hotel, cheap prices, huge sports complex built onto it, and surprisingly good food.

I find nothing wrong with Walnut Creek. I take BART over to see my shrink there.
