As sad as it seems, women in the surf industry have to sell a certain look rather than be just judged on their skill. Unlike the men, it seems that looking good in a Bikini is almost as important as ripping. That being said, since surfing requires a commitment to a certain level of fitness, looking better than the average obese American is a nice by product.

@lkilpatrick: that phenomenon isn't just in the surf industry. It's part of our culture at large.

I think it's instinctual. Anthropologically, women were valued and selected for their ability to breed and produce healthy offspring. There are studies which have shown that people find women with the most "average" features and proportions to be the most attractive. Genetically that implies genetic diversity and disease resistance.

The industrial revolution has made that type of attraction unnecessary, but we retain those behaviors since our genetics isn't able to keep up with the pace of cultural evolution.
