What a Sunny Weekend Brings

Rant - What a Sunny Weekend Brings

Noticed some folks having fun out there who didn't fit in with the usual attendees. Attempting to categorize them below.

Sea Janitors
SUP'ers are attracted to the sun like they're attracted to the idea of being a waterman like Laird. FACT. Glad the rest of us don't have to dodge those things when it gets good.

Red Bull Helmet Extreme!!!
One of the lowest points of my surfing life was when a kook wearing a helmet dropped in on me while pumping down the line of a waist-high wave.

Puss-n-Boots
Nearly 80 degrees out, 60 degree water temp. Nicest day of the year, so who were these guys wearing 5/4s with hoods, booties, and gloves?

Surf Hipsters
"I was into riding inflatable surf mats before they became mainstream."

Girls
Typical day: One or two girls out, ripping. This weekend: Dozens of girls out, the same one or two ripping.

Wetsuit Dysfunction
Zipper down the chest, knee pads on the backs of the knees, logo on the center back.

Nothing against the above, everyone seemed to be having a good time. Just reflecting on the very different crowd we get when the ocean seems inviting.

I ran into some puss n boots at bobo a few weeks ago. Temps perfect for no booties yet these guys were wearing hoods and booties!

I also noticed more than a usual # of:

Human Wind-mills - People paddling for every wave with a peak coming within 100ft of their general direction, and not making any.

Lighten up dude. Surfing is for everyone, kooks and all. You're thinly veiled mockery is annoying and not even that funny.

totally agree with you.

seems every time i had a peak to myself....a SUP or kayak would come from 40yds away and snake my ass!!
my lowest point...was taking off on a wave while YELLING at the kayaker down the line that Im coming...yet he still keeps paddling...looks back at me...paddles more and drops in. kayaker in the red jacket and white helmet with red sparkly kayak...fuck you.

also, to combine some of yours, I saw a group of SUP'ers that were obviously couples. the girls werent having the best time, getting tossed and generally not being able to handle themselves (nothing agains the ladies, most of the SUPers couldnt handle themselves....) but there was this one chick who literally fell off her board and landed on some dude chillin in the lineup. all the two of us could do was laugh as she raced to the shore in embarrasment.

LOL @ puss in boots....i was DYING in my 4/3...could have really used a spring suit.

I wear a hood year round for sun protection since my hair bailed on me years ago.

Agreed about it being pretty warm. I was definitely overheating in my 4/3.

I broke out the long john this weekend, so nice not to need a 4/3 for once. No booties as well.

So good to be out in boardies and a 1-mil L/S rashee over the weekend.

Here's my addition to the list:

Surf-Cross-Dresser
Dude wearing a woman's wetsuit.

Wheelie Paddlers
positioned way back, nose pointing 45 degrees up, and wondering why they're not catching any waves.

Boner Inducing hot Yoga chicks
Hot chicks practicing Yoga on the beach in positions usually seen in XXX-rated film genres. I had to wade in the shallows hide the raging tent that was pitched in my boardies.

Kook or not it was dope seeing my 11yr son catching some loooong rides on a crap soft top @ OB this weekend. Difference here is that he is only 11 and has better surf etiquette then most out there.

Lots of hooting & clowning around after each wave... Just how we like it!

Haha I can't believe I failed to include all these fascinating specimens!

And I didn't intend this to be a kook-bashing thing, not that it really has became one. We've all been there when learning. Full Disclosure: When I was a grom I once waxed the bottom of a bodyboard, applying the logic that if waxing skis/snowboards helps you go fast, why wouldn't it work that way in the water?

Haha very funny post. Surprised to see a few with gloves as well.

OK, I wasn't gonna post, but the dude with the big nipple-rings showering off at Lindy was kind of novel. for me, anyway. he wasn't in the water, but if we're going with yoga chicks...

@Hashcat, I saw that kayaker from down the beach when I was getting out. Gotta laugh outta him. Some flailing dude on a log dropped in and kicked his board out as I was trying to set up a barrel. Serious board damage and potential injury was narrowly avoided when I straightened out. He promptly paddled over and apologized though. A bit aggravating, but no big deal. Definitely some strange valleys in the water yesterday...

Ok, first off this weekend's circus is not a new phenomenon around here. This rant is a rant (which is anti-stoke).

Second, I boldly wore my old leaky 4/3 with hood and booties. Why does anyone care?

I did lose my cool though when someone on a meyerhoffer burned me, and that someone was Meyerhoffer. I piped up and was the bigger kook for it (aka "low point").

Learn to ignore the sunny weekenders and you will be more stoked.

Agreed with ^ for the most part. Everyone has their starting point. However, it's frustrating when new people have at it without a coach that shows them the rules of the game or by doing a little homework on their own. Drop ins by people that have no clue are definitely annoying, but more so, I consider it a safety concern (especially when it comes to longboards and SUPs). In terms of localization, considering how good of wave OB can produce, things are generally pretty chill. All of us that surf here regularly know that they're aren't many days a year when gorgeous weather combines with fun and mellow conditions that don't naturally regulate a full on beginner's ability to make it out into the lineup. Yesterday, and even more so Saturday sans the fun aspect, were examples of such days. Up it by a couple feet, add a weekday and a touch of fog, and they're gone. At one point or another we were all new to it and most of us have also gone elsewhere poaching. Personally, I find it a bit more offensive (even when out of town regionally or abroad) to get blatantly burnt by someone that knows what they're doing despite having abided by general rules and shown ample non-local respect and patience. On either side, it's bound to happen and yeah, keeping it mellow unless you have a real solid reason to get pissed is generally the best way to handle it. Have a laugh, but don't get all riled up. It definitely takes the fun away.

The sandbar I was on both Saturday and Sunday had gobs of people floating on thru, riding the tide. No one bothering to hold position.

80% of the time it was just me on the sets.

We have it good up here next to the golden gate.

KofK, those webbed gloves are an unfair advantage. See you at the secret sandbar on wednesday.
