What Surf Report Do You Believe????

Rant - What Surf Report Do You Believe????

Stoke Report states Sunday will be "poor." Sufline shows it will be "fair" and Magic Seaweed shows it as "five stars." Do I believe it will be Poor, fair or good? I guese there will only be one way to know for sure. I drive in from Vacaville so an accurate report is very helpful. What report do you trust the most? How does the swell and wave size vary at OB? Sometimes the report will be 10' swells but the waves are much smaller.

Most highly variable surf break I've surfed. I would say hourly. My prediction for tomorrow is: fair. From one end of the beach to the other can easily vary 5-7 foot with cond's going from poor to great.

Magic Seaweed always seems to be the least accurate surf forecast for Northern California, although they provide the easiest way to check out intervals. swellinfo.com seems to be the most accurate, although they don't provide accurate forecasts for south swells. My personal favorite is surfermag.com's forecast, they use the old Wavewatch model. Pacificwaverider.com is another good one, not always accurate though.

Vacaville! Oh man. That's a heinous drive to the beach. We need to take up a Great. Hwy house collection for you.

OB prediction for tomorrow: great, bad, OK, excellent, crappy, ripped up, all time. That's for the first 30 minutes you paddle out.

Here's my advice:

1. pack as many board as you can. 4 boards, ranging from a 6' shortboard to an 8' hybrid with maybe a fish & semi-gun thrown in for good measure

2. Drive to OB. Scout out conditions up & down the beach. Make sure you have 4-6 hours to take into account any changes in wind & tide

3. Cross fingers & pray that you will score some nice surfable conditions instead of a full day of windblown mess :-)

4. If really desperate, drive to Pacifica to check there, especially if local wind is screwing up OB.

Magic seaweed is just a computerized guess based on international data from buoys and satellites etc. There are many forecast sites that do this. For the most part I think that swell forecasts are pretty accurate but it's the local conditions that determine whether it will be good or fair or great or crummy. So far I think that Stormsurf gets the local winds and the swell for that matter most accurately. The only problem is that they only update once a week or so, so as you near the end of the forecast period the accuracy becomes more hit or miss. Wetsand does a pretty good job of predicting conditions for the next week with a description of what to expect on a day by day basis. Here is a link to a noaa page with a focus on Ocean Beach that is updated frequently and so far has been pretty accurate:

My friend and I used to laugh about how we would compile all the data possible factor in tides crunch all these together and then decide..."okay, I have to go shopping with my girlfriend on Sunday so let's go Saturday morning".

Here's my neighbors surf schedule every time they go out & leave no later than 6 A.M. Head to the Bo, then Stinson, over Tam to OB, work their way to Pacifica, and lastly Linda Mar. Decide on which place looked best, then either stay at Linda Mar, or back track to where ever it was they liked, hoping it's still as it was when they were first there. And sometimes, they'll go further north to Pt. Reyes.

Lots of driving & they do this religiously every time they go out.

What do you guys think about SpitCast?

Spit cast is interesting for exactly two seconds: second 1: nice web design. Second 2: interesting premise. Second 3: don't care ill go surfing anyway to never visit that site again.
