A windsurfer was found dead in the open ocean today about 2 1/2 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, authorities said. The unidentified man matched the description, given by a friend, of someone who had been windsurfing east of the bridge earlier in the day, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Junior Grade Jeremy Pichette. His body was found about two hours after a pedestrian on the bridge reported about 4:30 p.m. seeing an unmanned surfboard in the water, Pichette said.

The Coast Guard, along with authorities from San Francisco, Marin County and the National Park Service joined in searching for the missing man.

The one comment that stands out unfortunately is "...I windsurf there and he had to be rescued a few times..." :( I don't like SFGate comments in general, but if true, damn :( , let this be a lesson, if you're not prepared to take the punishment, stay in the parking lot. And if you see someone's board out there sans dude, look for him please :) I'd appreciate it since I've been lonely and on the outside before due to a snapped leash. I made it in (as I'm typing now), but just in case, it would be cool if you had a look.

Edit: or dudette :D

maximum human swimming speed, approximate: 5 knots (presuming olympic fitness level)

approx. top speed of currents in san francisco bay: 9 knots

one could make a case for windsurfing w/o a lifejacket being a very bad idea and a poor choice if made.

this shit happens.

exa:

todd skinner died because his climbing harness' belay loop was worn out. he knew it. his climbing partner knew it. he chose to climb on it. his partner let him.

bad decisions = bad results.

it happens even to people with a lot of experience.

laurence gonzales' book "deep survival: who lives, who dies, and why" is worth a read (http://www.deepsurvival.com/)
