World's first wavepool SUP event at Sun City in South Africa

2599

When ancient Hawaiians first started stand up paddle surfing, never in their wildest dreams would they have imagined their traditional sport being performed on a man- made wave in the middle of South Africa.

Riders from around the country flew 100's of kilometers inland to compete at the prestigious Sun City, Valley Of the Waves for the world's first ever stand up paddle surfing event at a wave pool. Riders included world famous big wave surfers Grant "Twiggy" Baker, winner of the XXL Billabong Big wave award, John Whittle, winner of previous Red Bull Big Wave Africa Challenge, Karina Figl from Austria, Eric Groenewoud from Netherlands, Craig Cuff, former SA long board champion plus other top riders from around South Africa.

SUPS are like your granny's adult tricycle. You look at it...you look closer...you walk up to it...you see yourself in the mirror reflection of the fenders...you check the tires...and then all of a sudden, you find yourself sitting on it, and then you're pedaling and going to the store with it while playing with the bell. RING RING Not surprising. Not saying you'd do it again, but that first ride probably was necessary to satisfy curiosity. For those that continue, I'd say the reasons are the same for the adult tricycle riders reasons. But those reasons are fictitious and rife with stigma.

@piss: they are not like your granny's adult tricycle.

Almost all the SUPers I've seen have a nice, round potbelly going. Grannys don't have the hard potbelly like these cats have.

If an SUP is a granny bike with a bell then a longboard is running real close to it. Just without the bell. Ring Ring. LMAO!!!
All in fun.
