The Zen of surfing prevents the wandering mind

Cyrus Writes: I have always had a hard time accepting organized religion. Take away the wars or the judgments or the politics that goes behind religion; all that is bad enough. I simply couldn't understand how, if God does indeed exist, an infallible Deity would conjure up such elaborate messages and stories in books like the Bible and Koran that are full of fallacies. In other words, I simply cannot find peace and harmony in something that makes blanket statements and raises far too many questions without providing adequate answers. For someone who considers himself to be a critical thinker, the math simply didn't add up. Which is why I find spiritual happiness in the philosophical way of life that is Taoism.

Yesterday was the Past. Today is the Present. And Tomorrow is a Gift. I say forget the Past and let's get on with the Presents and the Gifts!
Joking aside, the best thing about surfing to me is that I am in the present. Very meditative. Oh yeah, and it's really fun to ride waves.

What a cringeworthy way to start the day. For your daily meditation today, an enlightened surfer BS mythology mung that hollywood pushed on our sport and people like this guy will always bellyride it's drively wake, claiming fist shake knuckle bumps.
New shop in the Marina, this guys putting his CC marketing binder into action. Who missed the last SFGate submission on the Jay? It was a very informative update on the state of the Mavericks action sports meet, from an Industry Insider/Spiritual Counselor.
San Franciso Surf Co.- "hauolI Traditions" swirling pinstripes on the tailgate, where a loney "YO" used to reside.
Meet our newest claiming purveyor of SF surf.
Cyrus, soul-patch brother of the FOG.
If I come up from a duck dive and have my nose filled with the rank breeze of "get some hair action", I'll know it's offshore.

That was pure poetry, Chadburn.

My conspiracy theories on the Marina shop...its secretly funded by the Mollusk folks to make them seem less annoying. Alternatively, the new Marina shop has copied the Mollusk business model of identifying with another brand of kids with too much discretionary income.

All in fun...

I'll guess this shop will refuse to carry my "I kook, therefore I am" bumper stickers

Here's a far less douchey take on this topic

Another lesson which the sea has taught me is the gratitude for what I have, and what I receive. We have come to think that we deserve this life, that we deserve happiness, and that we deserve all that is good. The fickle and mercurial nature of the waves suggests otherwise. I am never happier than when surfing a six-foot wave with an offshore breeze, that magic combination of swell and wind which produces the best waves. Unfortunately, in most places in the world, this combination happens rarely. At my home break, if these conditions obtain a day a month, there is rejoicing.

Personally I've given up on writing about and reading about the rationale of surfing.
I think after reading that article and the responses here, that it's a REALLY good idea. :)
If one is looking for a reason to write about surfing, it probably should be based in humor, or at least what happened out there as a matter of fiction or fact, but specifically not of philosophy; Or that philosophy should be well hidden.
For example, what people want is this in writing about surfing:
The time you got bonked by a long board at LM while Yakkity Sax is playing in the background.
The time you saw a whale escorted by a pod of dolphins.
The time you saw your friend in a double overhead stand-up-fit-a -bus-in barrel.
The stories of personal peril.
But the internal calm, oneness with nature, yeah....that probably should stay off the keyboard and in your head, lest you really know what you're doing, and why.
