fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Wednesday 1pm - San Francisco - Ocean Beach, fair surfing

Ess aight out there. ######. Waist to SH. Good peak was packed for a bit, but there were others. Lotta drop, bottom turn and shut downs with a few rare good ones in the mix. There's some texture, but it could be worse.

Seems like we're back to naming aves./locations lately. Since I live closest to "######", and it's routinely the most crowded part of the beyatch as it is, I really wish we wouldn't. Glad you had fun, though!

Had a mid-day jaunt, too. Biggest & best surf I've seen in weeks, but I ain't tellin' you where (nods to @kenny). Unfortunately that meant it was shoulder high & fair. But, still, there was some energy, and some trips over the falls. Pretty stoked.

Other observations:
I don't normally midday surf... Are there always that many girl surfers midday? Way higher % of total than during dawn patrol
Lots of grom'ish types out. Guess they're not back in school? I've grown accustomed to the crusty old farts like me
*Huge* jellyfish spotted near shore. Talking at least a foot across. And w/big ole tentacles hanging low. Didn't think we got those up here. Happy I didn't drop in on *that* local
One dude out there was laughing maniacally. Or is it sadistically. Not sure, but either way, he freaked me out. I paddled away.

So over it. We're talking the most well-known beach in a city of a million people. Plus, I used an acronym that only someone that's surfed there would know. And really, anyone who reads Stokereport and immediately jumps straight to a street or area of OB mentioned in a report without looking around Great Highway first is tripping. I post and poke around here cuz' it's fun to shoot the shit. However, I never rely on the yelp-esque style surf reports found here, on Surfpulse, Surfline, Pacific Waverider, etc. I rely on my own eyes and calls from trusted friends. Sorry I blew up the spot; the reality of it is that when OB's on, folks'll be on it. Even when it's crowded, it's generally manageable, and if you know how to hunt you can still get waves. And don't forget that hardly anyone here posts pre-surf. It's usually an hour or two post action. By then, as our beach can change so rapidly, some other spot of sand will likely be working better than the said precious little local haunt. Other area spots might deserve to remain on the hush, but getting bent about south, north, streets, and so forth at OB is ridiculous. We might as well suggest that people need to stop talking about how specific spots in the Mission have good burritos because the lines in our favorite taquerias are getting too brutal.

Bahahaha. Apparently A C R O N Y M is a secret spot that needs to be # signed out as well now.

@hurricanewe. i hear you. it's not really logical, but the self censorship is a small concession that allows us to keep everyone happy and the site going. i'm not sure if you've been around for the major wars on the site. they weren't pleasant. far from it.

i fixed the "acromym" bug. stoopid regex ;)

Word. I hear ya. I'm not trying to provoke a web brawl or ruin a peace treaty. And, I fully appreciate the site and what ya do. I'll leave you all with this. Some kids named Chunk, Mouth, and Mikey passed it off to me when I started surfing:

Dig on that size...You nooners probably had it cleaner. Just got back from a 5-7 jaunt. Cool size, and man alive were there tons of lolphins. Taking all the waves and then doing full gainers out the back and hanging out wagging their tails. Truancy never looked like it was so much fun.

Pretty interesting weather pattern. Sort of summer foggy with hints of fall. When the period gets over 14 seconds then we will have some waves. I never surf ocean beach. I always just go that big lake due west of San Francisco.

Lots of dolphins loitering. Those jellyfish looked like the stinging type, are they? It's such a rarity to see the groms and the young ladies out there in numbers, but it's a welcome addition for sure.

I'm sorry, against my better judgment I'm commenting on this.

One thing that I don't understand (aside from the criticism of this entirely reasonable report) are people posting information on places that they (ironically) hope will remain a secret.

(Ex. "Had a great time at ###### in San Mateo. Can't tell you where, specifically.")

Why report this in the first place? If it encourages others to find the spot, then the report has officially 'ruined it' for everyone. If it doesn't, then well. What useful purpose does it serve?

@ greenberg - I could not agree more - I surf at a place I call lefties (somewhere in San Mateo county) now and again... by naming it my own name I'm pretty sure folks will have a hard time finding it... and since it's usually me and no one I'm thinking my secret is safe (or I'm surfing it when it's lame so better surfers are elsewhere)... Now how hard is that?

Sorry, I realize this is opening a can of worms. But I guess what I'm saying is - if you're hoping to keep the spot a secret, why report at all?

To me, this is like going on a forum for restaurants and saying, "I found this great new restaurant. It's cheap and delicious. I had a great time. It was superb in every respect. I can't tell you where it is."

To me, it's either -

(a) You want people to enjoy a spot (so posting a report makes sense). Or

(b) You want to keep the spot a secret. So posting a report (any report, even one using secretive language) doesn't make sense. The only logical purpose here would be to gloat about the great, secret time that you had.

Maybe this is just one of the sad (increasingly confusing) tradeoffs we make because of the heated emotions surrounding this issue (which in many cases, seem entirely detached from reason).

But at any rate, I've said my piece. This counselor rests his case. You are all free to now bash and despise me.

Love ya, not despise. Personally I think this site more than anything is intended to be a community forum where one can benefit from the aggregation of surfers, so that P.B. can get rid of her board in lieu of taking city hall sponsored testosterone for gender reassignment, and surf for life pow-wows. Both very good things. For mine own part, when I do post reports, it's to specification: "O.B. was great, maybe you should get some" (after I've gotten mine, heh). I understand where you're coming from Kenny. It does make sense. You're probably an O.G. OB surfer who remembers in the early 90's or earlier when there was no one around. At all. So, I empathize with your position. I'm not really into creating reports all too much anymore, but mostly I'll comment if there's something funny to say like "yeah dude, I saw your judo chop!", but that's about it. Sometimes when the surf is absolutely craptastic, both in forecast and in reality, I will tell everyone to stay away via a post. It's out of empathy for the sleepers, and well sometimes I like to write and say wacky stuff, for mine own amusement mostly.
Keep being you, and let's just keep the location turtle down and don't let him pop up.

Perspective. That's why I post. Love to hear what other people's thoughts were of the surf or whatever topic strikes a fancy. Didn't grow up surfing, so I soak up info and perspective to gain anything I did not get from the cornfield. Probably pretty lame to someone surfing all their life. But I don't care, it helps me understand and confirm things. Otherwise, I'd be even more of a kook. I've learned a lot about how things go around here from this site. From the Chris Wilsons to the Kenny Reyes to the Piss and Sticker combo and everyone else. And for that I say a big Thanks! Oh yeah *and* I like to say wacky things, too. Mostly for my own amusement as well ( which is pretty obvious). :)
