fair surfing conditions at Marin - Bolinas

6446
Tuesday 4pm - Marin - Bolinas, fair+ surfing

Did the post dawn patrol today at the Bo' and what fun we had in the water. Not to crowded, and plenty of knee slappers, with some occasional waist high sets that peeled all the way into either the channel or the reform depending on where you were at. Water's still not too cold, but damn, getting out of that wet wetsuit and taking a nice warm rinse is priceless.

Still plenty of those damn cruiser SUP's trying to take all the waves on the right, but sometimes you just need to snake them out of the way on the inside. Ha Ha!

If I lived in Bolinas I'd be thoroughly annoyed by these frequent advertisements for surfing in Bolinas.

They're great reports, but read like tourist ads begging people to come crowd up the line-up.

Just sayin.

@wrybread, are you kidding? "Knee high slappers" and pictures of SUPS, I think if anything these reports scare people away!!

wrybread

Even if it was the most negative report in the world (which it isn't), it keeps the spot on people's radar. And its clearly naming the spot, which I thought wasn't cool here.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Bo reports and the vicarious stoke I get, I can just easily imagine locals seeing it as internet exploitation. I sure would.

Geez. Is it just me. Or did the surf paranoia on here just jump the shark?

Folks this is Bolinas. At 1ft. With a line-up full of the 'locals' (aka beginners on soft tops).

Is anyone really claiming these baby waves as their 'turf'?

It's not paranoia, it's just about respect. I go on this site a lot and I might seem preachy, but I swear I'm a nice guy and not a dick. Makai, you may or may not remember that the locals of Bolinas would take down the road sign every time it was put up on highway 1 because they didn't want people coming to their town, let alone to their beach. Finally, the state gave up. Bolinas likes to be discrete. There's that word again. Discrete. I know you love taking pictures, and thats great, but please understand that it does irk some people, including myself. Those who find it annoying are not assholes. Most of them are probably really nice, but are just getting a little upset. Share you pictures with your friends, but not to the public. please

Reports for the Bo' should remain vague and just say Marin instead. The picture of the reverse nose big bird riding SUPer is awesome. Thanks for sharing.

umm, @mr, there's that word again...but twice. Please, do try to be more discreet with your spelling...and stop disrespecting the discretion. It's so digressing.

was there on monday. small, weak-ass surf with two dozen people on it. made linda mar look like an uncrowded reef pass somewhere. not that there's anything wrong with that particularly. love the SUP-landing-air-reverse pic. hope this helps.

I just checked and www.StokeParanoiaReport.com is still available. We could post the "Marin" reports there.

None of what I would call the Bolinas "locals" that I've met actually live in Bolinas. They're all very appreciative of the spot. If you're going to white-knight on behalf of the townies, you better be a townie yourself, and Bolinas is for billionaires so please give me some of your cash and I'll stop posting about it. Thanks!

Broseidon

Before you backseat mod a report, please notice there is a "Bolinas" tag up on the top of the site.

Bolinas, Leadbetters, Cowells, Old Man's, Doheney....I'm all for being respectful/discreet, but some places just don't count. It's not (fill in the blank of legit unmentionable wave). Don't get me wrong, I love to go and goof off at this spot occasionally, but lighten up.

mrniceguy

I'm from marin, not bolinas. Not like it matters where I'm from. I work at a grocery store in sf now, and rent a room. Not like that matters either. Where y'all from? Just kidding, I don't care. I grew up going out to Bolinas long before I started surfing. It's a special place. I'm not white knifing on the locals' behalf, but being a humble person, I wouldn't disrespect the town when they've made it clear that they like to remain under the radar. It's like going to another country and making no effort to acknowledge the culture. I know, I sound like a snobby prick. It doesn't help that we're communicating anonymously on the internet. It's not conducive to healthy disagreement. But I really feel strongly about this stuff, so I'm typing about it. Thanks sharkturd, I'm not much much of a speller. Apparently discrete is a word too, but yea... wrong word. @Beard: seriously right? who is this guy?

PooPatrol

@tehdely. Your comment reeked of entitlement without any conception of the history behind surfing at this spot or otherwise. I would put good money that there is no way you have been surfing for longer than 3 years and probably get out at best 3-4 a month, probably closer to one. How am I doing? Pretty close?

See this is the problem with this site. Mr. Nice Guy and wrybread are the only people on here that made an argument that a real surfer would understand and they get like -9 votes for it. Its ridiculous. These guys are not being dicks or raining on the stoke parade. They are trying to drop knowledge about the culture of respect and etiquette in surfing. Anyone groaning about the right to post spot specific reports hasn't been surfing long enough to understand the rich history that comes with surfing and that surrounds any given spot. If you don't understand Mr. Nice Guys post then you have no idea about the history of Bolinas or and don't care that 90% of the kooks out there don't show locals or the community the respect it deserves.

You all want to be stoked on surfing, which is great. Go for it. Be stoked. Enjoy the water. Surfing is a beautiful thing that should be shared with all those who want to brave these icy northern California waters. But the problem is that so many times I see examples on this site of newer surfers not taking the time to listen and really understand the nuances of being in the water. They want to take on the identity, but don't want to pay dues.

Now that I've given some tough love on what it really means to be a surfer, I'll kick back and wait for the red thumbs down to come rolling in.

mrniceguy

As @Eatnector pointed out, I think the issue is that people are objecting to Bolinas being a named spot on the site. Not the report itself.

WOW, didn't think such an innocent report would take on so much vitriol. Been there and done it before, but not ever with such hatred. As for my history of surfing at Bolinas, been going there before most if not all of you were born. Remember, I'm the Old Fart here on SR.

Having said that, I have the utmost respect for the town, and the locals and regulars who surf there. We have developed a mutual respect in the water, and in the parking areas too. We share the surf equally now, as compared to decades ago when you could count on your car being broken into, or your possessions rummaged through on the beach. Before we leave after each visit, we walk the beach with a bag and pick up discarded trash from those who don't respect the beach and town. We make sure the bathrooms are clean, and that the homes and residents are not bothered when we visit too, meaning we try to park away from the front of their residents so as to allow them to access their homes.

So if SR John decides to take down the Bolinas tag, I have no problem with that. But remember, there is always the local shop report, but will some of you haters go after them, and in person, I doubt it.

This picture I've posted before was taken in 1967. That's me on the left corner of the wall with the white shirt on just out of the Army by one week. My Brother is on the right putting on his vest.

In closing I'd like to add that if any of you are there when I'm out, as only a few have done before, please come and introduce yourself. I too am a very nice person, and will continue to surf as long as this old body will allow me considering what has happened to in the past several years. Surfing allows my endorphins to kick in and take some of the pain away, and nobody's going to take it away from me.

If I could click the thumbs up below PooPatrol's post 10 times I would.

And yes, that's a really stupid sounding sentence.

But in all seriousness, we're respectfully discussing the issue, and I don't think anyone has flown off the handle.

I personally don't think Bolinas counts as so disposable a wave that it should be disrespected, as a couple of people seem to be arguing. Its in the boonies for most people, the locals try hard to keep it off the tourist map, and naming it will inevitably increase crowds. And on weekends with the right swell its hard to even find a parking spot...

How do you think people there would react if you put a sign on your car saying "I'm going to post about my surf session and name this spot on the internet when I get home"? And does that reaction matter?

So I personally see naming it as disrespectful, and needlessly so. What's wrong with calling it "somewhere in Marin" or something similarly vague? "The Hippie Wave"? Honestly, anything that keeps it out of Google's reach strikes me as a big improvement.

And Makai, I mean no disrespect by any of this, and as I said I love your reports. Just voicing my opinion about naming spots, especially little gems like this one. And someday maybe we'll share a beer at Smiley's or the Coast Cafe and laugh about the absurdity of all things internet.

I surfed the boat channel earlier this fall when OB was big and blown out. It was akin to sticking your head into a bee hive. Lots of agitated energy in the water. No aloha. Not stoked. Probably won't ever go back. Localism works.

Mind your P's and Q's in Bobo. Every year or so an 'outsider' who doesn't gets beat down to within an inch (sometimes they take the inch also). I wish folks at OB took as good care of their beach and facilities. If you don't live there, act like an invited guest.

I'm surprised to learn that you're an "old fart", Makai. It's not what I pictured. I'm not trying to take your stoke away and certainly not using "hate" and I stand by every word that I wrote. Yes BO and OB are blown up (put them together and you have BOOB), but I will continue to be discreet with my surfing. Stay stoked

I propose this test for mentioning spots on the internet:

If you'd be comfortable putting a big sign on your car saying "I'm going to post about this spot on the internet when I get home", then its cool to post about it on the internet.

Bolinas obviously doesn't pass this test, while Linda Mar probably does.

I'm new to the Bay area. However, even before I read stoke report I had seen Bolinas Bay on the map and knew I'd head up that way looking for waves at some point. I just haven't yet, and I've seen Bolinas mentioned in the reports countless times. However, after seeing so many people in this particular thread airing all their frustration about Bolinas getting reported I've decided maybe its worth a visit on my next day off.

In short, if you really want to "respect" this local "secret" then maybe you should stop talking about it.

PooPatrol

First @jesus happy birthday.

Second, in short, maybe you should read everything above and try to understand why its being talked about.

@ Poo, thank you. But I'm not Jesus. Also, Christmas wasn't the time Jesus was born, and it wasn't even part of the religion Jesus founded. It was added about 500 years later. But I digress....

You're wrongly assuming I haven't read this thread. You probably wouldn't find yourself complaining so often about no one listening if you stopped assuming that no one else reads the content here.

@wavecrafter You're welcome... It just my year long christmas present to the stoke report community in honor of @jesus.

@jesus. You're my Jesus. Don't worry i'll say happy birthday again at Easter.

Two words. Reading comprehension. Didn't score to hot on the SAT's did ya? Give it another look over. Maybe you'll do better next time.

jesus.walked.on...

There's no need to remember Easter either. Just continue to complain whenever people report stoke at stokereport.com. Then Jesus will be happy with you, and so will everyone else.

Actually I scored pretty well on the SAT's and the LSAT's. It is also a mistake to assume that anyone who disagrees with you lacks the ability to comprehend the written word. Just consider it. I"m not saying you have to change right away. Maybe a New Year's resolution or something.

just want to point out that the only true "owners" of Bolinas are the twenty foot long two-ton ones with rows of massive razor sharp teeth cruising off the mouth of the lagoon. Everything else relating to possessiveness about this location seems a little bit ridiculous, considering the cat has been let out of the bag long ago. just sayin'.
