For those who like the meaty monsters, this is from somewhere between OB and Linda Mar near a pier at about 1pm. There were no takers.

The shorebreak becomes a serious coffe grinder when it's HH+. Very difficult to get out of the water. Very steep drop off with soft, gravelly sand, which sucks one's feet down. It doesn't push you in to shore but continuously recycles you back out and back in. Sketchy. Use caution.

FYI there was at least one, I think two, drownings (non-surfers) at the pier area last winter due to the effect sandcastle describes. (Although I'm not certain the photos are of this particular spot, can't say).

Experienced that myself just south of the pier a couple of years ago. Was about 12 feet from the shore but could not get in. Head high shore break on the dry sand, 6 feet out into the water was too deep to stand. At one point I was actually standing on sand but could not break free of the suck out and was then pulled back into the water by the next wave. Plus there was a very fast moving southerly drift. I remember sitting on my board watching the shore go by thinking "This is ridiculous, I can't get in". Some guy came running up on the beach and was trying to help me by signalling when there was a lull. Needless to say I eventually made it up onto level sand but it was pretty weird and definitely a situation where an unsuspecting beach stroller could easily end up pulled in drowned in a matter of minutes.

Is that something that occurs on a specific tide? I'm wondering if it might be less of a problem at low tide...

Oh yes. I have received and witnessed some serious shore pound implosions. There is a fine art and a little luck to the get out. But on the right tide, swell angle and sand bars... ya, actually its really not worth a check, keep on driving south. :)
