poor surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

2130
Monday 10am - San Mateo - Linda Mar, poor+ surfing

Poorplus or fairminus... hard to say exactly. Things that worked: offshore breeze, sunny, a little bit of swell. Things that didn't: low tide at the closeouty-spot, chilly, long lulls... We went in, caught a few short drop-&-bail closeouts, then paddled toward a spot that was working. By the time we got there, the beach was empty (another plus), and that spot was indeed working. Found a few fun lefts.

Walking back toward the lot, we saw a big pile of meat. Yep, the head was ripped right off, as was most of the skin/fur/blubber. What is so damn tasty about those pinniped heads?

Looked like G got some fair- waves out of the mix, but I was not as lucky and signed up for the poor+ package The one nice long, lovely shaped waist+ high last wave I got all the way into the beach made up for all the waiting and the kicking out of closeouts prior. Could have used a few more like that and a hot chocolate.

Ventured toward the bigger end and mostly found closeouts with a few nice ones sneaking through. Had some drop and stalls and a couple fun ones. Completely missed the decapitated. Probably stepped right over it.

It was HUGE and pretty far up the beach. I thought it was a log till I saw the bones poking out. Nice left lined up with it tho.

Awww, I hope that wasn't the seal that always hung around the big end. That guy was friendly and I'd see him almost every time I went out there.

Nah, that guy's not very big. This was an elephant seal or something sizeable. It's hard to tell fromt he pics but it's pretty large. I didn't see him today, but I'm pretty sure the spotted harbor seal is doing fine. There have been some new baby dolphins lately, too. Ciiiiiircle of liiiiiiiiiiffffeeeee.

This afternoon and evening was the best time I've had at LM in awhile. Canada was shoulder/fun sized on sets and actually lined up. Two to three turns in one wave at Linda? Unbelievable. It was definitely a bit soft servey, but I'll take it. The good times were short lived though. Around 4:30 things got weird; wind shift, increase in inconsistency, increase in greedy SUPers, etc. The post-rain factor felt a bit risky as I've been battling an intense sinus and chest infection for two weeks that I likely got via a LM storm surf. Whatever bacterial clusterfuck it was resulted in an antibiotic prescription over the weekend. I rationalized it with the belief that what I may have contracted today will be eliminated by the 8 days of pills I have left. Also, something big enough to create a strong current rush around my legs swam under me today. Was probably nothing. On the off the chance that it was, I stealthy plastered seal outline decals on the bottom decks of all the SUPs around. They taste better.

Anyone snag some of the blubber to make candles out of it? I'm sure you could sell them out of Mollusk as "all natural" candles.
