SCRATCHYYYYYYY!!!!!!! I was the only guy out and there was a sole whale playing in the lineup. I couldn't believe my eyes, nor could I believe that I had gotten that close. I paddled over to it, and it ran away. Then sticker and this other guy showed up. We caught some blech waves but whatever, it's something to do, especially after a sleepless, perturbed night. I should have medicated but whatever I'm not like that. Sticker stuck around and a few minutes later we kept seeing bulbous buoyant barnacled bodies bobbing up and down, so I started to chase. Me and my bright ideas. We got to them and I shit you not, if we wanted to pet them, we could have. I was within ***10feet*** of a mother and her calf, but I decided to not touch them for fear of a breach due to spooking it. Absolutely amazing. Quite possibly the most amazing thing I've ever seen out there. I've seen whales before, but not that close. Contact made. Contact.

Haha, yeah, pretty sweet. 3 of 'em. Kept our distance, but they ended up swimming towards us & getting super close. Was amazing.
Thank goodness, too, b/c the surf was absolute shite.

A couple weeks ago, from our Bodega Bay rental, we watched several whales playing around in the water for a few hours from the dining room!

I was witness!
I was driving down Hwy 1 headed to 4 mile, came over the hill after Greywhale Cove, looked out over the Montara lineup and saw two dudes out in the water. Then a huge whale breached right between them! I pulled off into the dirt lot, ran out to the cliff and watched exactly what you said happened. Amazing!
I then realized I had my phone and snapped a video, and a few shots of them swimming off. It doesn't capture how close they were...but you have my word. It happened!
This is the first time I've ever posted to SR, but figured there was a chance whoever the guys were might be on this site.

if thats sticker and piss in the water with the whale then thats one of the things that makes this site great. to have an amazing experience, post about it then have someone post an image of it. amazing. good job fart.

And yeah, the whale encounter certainly made up for the surf. Only thing worse than terrible surf is terrible surf in terribly cold water... Man, those upwellings there make for some chilly sessions.

Happy to witness & share the evidence of your Close Encounters of the Whale Kind.
The whales were out in force yesterday! I saw another one off the coast near Davenport and then there were a couple 100 meters outside the Four Mile peak when I was in the water. Not nearly as close as they were to you guys, but still very cool.
BTW, I'd played hooky from work b/c it was my birthday. Witnessing your encounter, having one of my own, and some good waves further down south = best birthday gifts ever!
