fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

Monday 2pm - San Mateo - Linda Mar, fair surfing

Surprisingly not-mobbed for what's technically a holiday -- plenty of peeps, but not as overloaded as expected. Our mid-day session on this gorgeous sunny Columbus Day found a few sets of WH goodness that held up where it had been closing-out earlier in the week. Yeah, there were long lulls -- but not so bad when it's this nice.

observed: @tracey's sweet new board.

How'd she like it?

New board was fun! It paddles well. I got plenty of little waves, including one frontside so I could see what all the hull fuss was about. It has some fun little moves to it on inside sections too. Expect to see it a lot this winter. :)

You got it, Cazart. New (used) board in all it's fanciness:

@Tracey- what's the dim's on that board?

tracey

6'10, 21 1/2", and not sure... it doesn't have the dim's listed and since it's a hull I'm not really sure how wide it is. 3? 2 3/4? Anyone know how thick these typically run?

Stringerless and singlefin too, for extra fancy.

Yes. I could see that being really good for you.

saw a board recently very similar to Tracey's and have been wondering how it would ride ever since...
I like the Andreini shapes a lot...

I had a great time with my kid at this location today around mid-day with some fun had by all

I hate to temper your elation by playing the bad cop, Tracy, but I feel it's my duty to interject some realism for you about hull bottoms. I've found them to be a dubious and gimmicky design that is less than ideal for surfboards. For lack of a better term, they're rolly polly in the water and not an easy board to surf. They surf rather clunkily...a shortboard that surfs like a longboard, except that you can't even nose ride it! And if your single fin isn't glassed-in, then I suggest you get yourself a deep one because if you ever lay it over on-rail, say on a bottom turn, the fin is going to pop out of the water...I gawronteee it. Like a crappy day when no one is out, there's a reason few people are riding hull boards. But try it out. Some folks say they like them, and you might too. Thumb me to hades or whatever! It's just my opinion. It makes me feel good to have an opinion.

Fair enough, but realistically: I surf small waves.

I'm not going to be taking this out in hollow overhead stuff. This is a chest high swooshy board for dicking around and should be pretty fun for mushier point breaks (that's why I was emphasizing the fanciness of the board rather than the performance abilities.) Oddly enough the board I have taken out in larger surf is my 9'4 singlefin. Haven't had any fin-popout problems. Have has a lot of "oh hell I'm about to eat soooo much shit because I can't duck dive this beast" problems.

I'm still working on getting better riding my traditional thruster. Hopefully when I find the right board in that shape in a smaller size, I can use it for more traditional shortboard pursuits, but I have no illusions that I'm going to be shredding that Andreini like a pro, getting barreled left and right ;)

Btw, Rev. If we happen to wind up at the same break sometime when I've got it with me, give me a shout and you can try it.

Glad your kiddo had fun. I saw a few groms having a blast out there. Perfect little waves for them.

Yes, and fair enough to you too, tracey. I think my my point was to lower your expectations of that board just a little. You'll find that board will work best down Cruz way on the points, not so much on our local beachies. Also if you watch vids of "pros" surfing these shapes you'll notice how centered their location on the board, riding and turning...their stance is as if trimming on a longboard. It's just a different feel and perhaps a bit harder to figure out. Lastly, and you probably already know this, but work on tuning turtle through larger waves on the longboard. When executed properly you will be dragged backwards much less.

Thanks, and yeah, I getcha. I think my expectations are well in the "it's something different" camp and not the performance surfing camp. I think it's going to be a fun board when visiting friends in Mex or surfing the winter longboard spots, probably not so fun at Ocean Beach.

Turtling is fine for most waves, but man, there are some waves where nothing's going to help you if you're in the wrong place on a log. That's usually when I admit being beyond my depth and head in, after getting trounced by the wave that is. As much as I admire Angry Frank's skills logging bigger stuff, I sure don't have them...

I will Tracey if only to see the board up close... I think I weigh somewhere in the two of you ducktaped together range so it might not float me enough to catch a wave at LM... and from what I hear it might not perform all that well when we're next out at Pipe (sorry sharkturd no disrespect intended...take it with a grin and a wink... no malice here!) grin...
