fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Half Moon Bay

Monday 9am - San Mateo - Half Moon Bay, fair surfing

Jetty actually wasn't too bad. I would call it fair and when I pulled out it looked to be cleaning up a bit. About waist-high+ on the more generous waves.

I was a total kook out there. Went over the falls 15 min into the session, my board whipped around and finned my bicep. It was weird..the immediate shock of the pain almost made me throw up in the water. Really odd. My hand instantly turned purple (even though it didn't get hit) and I figured it was time to paddle in. Circulation has started returning to my arm but I'm sure I'm going to have a hell of a bruise soon. *end whining*

dammit dude, that sucks :(
My board was introduced to my back about two months ago, so I know what that feeling is like. It's not puppies rainbows and candy. Few days, hopefully you'll laugh about it, so take some pics and post them for the class :D

I was launched airborne by a lip, landed on knee first on my center fin and slid into the sidebite. I bet it was a spectacular looking fall, but oddly enough the bruise was minor at best. I'm not sure whether to wish you a rad bruise for your trouble, or a lucky minor result.

My sympathies. I prescribe icepacks and tasty snacks for you all day.

I had a fine time kooking it up out there from 8.30-10. A "crowd" of 6 less-friendly folks showed up near the end, and grim-facedly crowded me off the only peak.
Not sure if it was fair or not - there was a lot of variation.

Oww! I took a fin hit to my arm on New Year's Day. It's still bruised...

Yesterday I got pulled over the falls and my fin smacked my thigh super hard. When I got in I notice that one of my fin boxes was ripped out. It was a bummer due to the fact that the waves were crap.

OB ###### wave... over falls belly flop in front of board, tail of board caught up with my head and there was still hair in it when I gave it to Mr. Martins.
Fun times!

i took my friend's fins to the top of my head once at the jetty. this macker set came through when we were paddling out, knocked us both around, and not sure what happened, but suddenly her board was directly above me and descending fast. it actually hurt less than i thought it would, but for a second i thought i was about to die, and i had a huge egg for a few days.

Ha, Zurffy, poor Alex. I also gave him a board with hair still stuck in the glassing. I tried to get most of it out as I was handing it over to him. Poor guy is prob routinely grossed out by what we do to our boards.

Love the war story exchange. I would have bet money I was going to have a huge bruise but it oddly looks like just a small scratch. The arm is still a bit tingly and numb, my hand is noticeably a few degrees colder than my other hand..but its starting to feel better already. Still felt good just to get wet today (albeit just for about 15 minutes).

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, chief. It was comin' back, from the island of Tinian Delady, just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know... was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. Huh huh. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, chief. The sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know it's... kinda like ol' squares in battle like a, you see on a calendar, like the battle of Waterloo. And the idea was, the shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces.
Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player, boson's mate. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. Well... he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us. He's a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper, anyway he saw us and come in low. And three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water, three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

Interesting (to me) factoid; the USS Indianapolis referenced in Quints monlogue above, picked up major pieces of the first atomic bomb from Hunters Point, sailed under the Golden Gate on July 16, 1945 and delivered its carbo to Tinian Island, prior to the sinking and the shark attacks referenced.

So the ABomb, this ship and its men passed thru the waters we surf.

check out this story about the incident. The curious part to me is how they court martialed the captain. I don't get it. To what end?

Not surprisingly, I read a book on this. It's called In Harms Way and it's amazing: http://thewatermanslibrary.com/Site/InHarmsWay.html

I recommend it. The politicians and the military brass went after the captain for the usual cover your ass reasons. He finally was vindicated, but not before he took his own life. The book is good and reads like a summer thriller.

I posted this 6 weeks ago when it happened. Pretty gnarly. Fins to the leg over the falls. And O'Neill still hasnt sent me my suit back yet. Any experience on how long it usually takes? I was told 3-4 weeks when I dropped it off...

@kootzky: That's quite a fashion statement ...
