Thanks for the report. I've just added a new pacifica pier location (SMPP) and taken the liberty of moving this report into it.

Take away Ft Point, add Pacifica Pier?? The pier is not a spot to report on either, arguably even more so than Ft Point. Hate to keep beating a dead horse but this is not a beginner spot, has extremely powerful currents, and a heavy shorebreak. It is a spot where unsuspecting people/surfers can get into a lot of trouble in a very short amount of time...just look at the extremely high relative # of drownings and rescues for proof.
No point in getting overly worked up about it but in my opinion, file this one in the 'mystery spot' category and stick to naming the already highly-surfed/camera-equipped spots, as is the established custom in surf-reporting everywhere.
Curmudgeon out.

Maverick's has reports and cameras on surfline. IMO, it's as dangerous, or more dangerous, than anything that gets reported on here.
If a spot's deemed to be dangerous, I think a boilerplate disclaimer w/ description might be in order, but simply restricting information for the sake of it doesn't make it safer. To the contrary, dissemination of information makes surfing safer for beginners. Those people that you reference who get into trouble are in that situation because they don't know any better.

I like the idea of a danger meter.
@curmudgeon, I salute your commitment to your viewpoint, even though I disagree with it.

I stopped by Pacifica Pier @ 4:45pm. Decent size, looked about head high, lots of energy in the water, short period and somewhat blown out by the onshore wind.
There were exactly ZERO surfers in the water as far as the eye could see.

I surf this spot when it is glassy and not walled up like it usually is. It has plenty of power on tap, when you are ready to step up, if not head down to Linda Mar. As for the drownings, I dont think any of these people had a wet suit or floatation device strapped to them. This spot can be epic A-Frames in the winter. Also I dont mind not having the crowds there.

I stopped by the pier yesterday morning for a look with only my longboard. Having never surfed the spot and seeing only shortboards out there, I elected to head to lindy. I erred on the side of caution I suppose, would have been more comfortable with someone who knew the spot...

Ugh. Keep it to OB and LM. You should be able to figure out what is going on in between. There is no need for this little cyber community to continually remind people to check this spot. For those rare times when wind, swell, tide, and sand come together for this place to be fun it's a great respite from the crowds to the north and south. Leave some sense of chance and adventure out there close to home. Sorry for the negativity but your positivity is bringing me down.

For what it's worth, there were triple the people out on Sunday than there were on Saturday. I commented that the word got out without even having seen this. I realize I'm in somewhat of a glass house here, but I always liked the saying "vague is vogue."

@surfpulse: I think your "not often checked spot in San Mateo County" qualifies as vague (and vogue!). I just assumed that you were at Gray Whale from that description or maybe down at one of the ###### in HMB. Maybe other people either 1) read between the lines better than I do and knew where you were or 2) gave up on OB and just headed South and ended up there, as it looked choice while coming down the hill (which it did -- I saw it). It's a pretty obvious spot, which is what threw me with the "not often checked" part. I assumed you were somewhere a little more out of sight.
If I were trying to find your spot based on your report, I would have gone elsewhere.

@tcannon Yes, could have been a lot of reasons why it filled up on Sunday, but pretty sure my tweet was vague enough to not be one of them. I was more implying that the explicit report here wasn't En Vogue (or vague.) It's an old can of worms, but I like to search and discover.
@Rev.MCC You can catch a glimpse for 5-10 seconds as you come around the bend, but tough to call that a "check" from over a mile away at 55mph+.
