Reporting in from Rockaway Beach, NYC where Breakwater surf shop has $30 board rentals for the day. Good people there after recovering from 2-3ft of water filling up their shop.

The waves were better yesterday but today was our day to shred. The 20mph winds and occasional drops of rain made the experience that much more thrilling. Fun little croozy waves coming through to satisfy the desire for some stoke. Rockaway is chill. There is a ton of rebuilding going on however things are looking nice.

Post surf hunger led us to Rockaway taco. It's pricey but the quarterpipe out front is fun and two tacos hit the spot. I'd recommend fried plantain black bean taco for a unique taste.

Soft as the tide came up, but plenty surfable. Every now and again a wave with an actual shoulder would show up. Wind is still light. Better than OB I think.

Yeah we surfed the slop this morning. Conditions were objectively terrible, but I'm giving it a solid POOR because:
1. There were occasional HH 'waves'
2. We both caught a few legit rides
It was pretty hilarious overall though. Combination of drops, shoulders, closeouts, rag doll moments. I imagined people watching us from the lot wondering what the fuck we were doing out there. Needless to say we had it all to ourselves :-)

Surfed SC the Last 2 days.
South Swell Hitting nice, not perfect but nice overhead sets. As usual, Crowded as fuck. I surfed the second peak and it was crowded.
Got my waves tho so Im stoked, Sunny Skies, Beautiful.
Theres just too many people in the world.

OK - so I had a great session this AM, so you can take this with a grain of salt. And the 'fair' rating pertains to only one small section of the beach, because we saw pretty variable conditions. If you want to de-rate it, call it a fair-.

So - we found some genuinely nice waves out there today. It was intermittent and shifty, but there were semi-clean HH+ rights and lefts rolling through if you were patient & lucky. Multiple big fun drops & a few rights that connected up through the inside. Paddle unfortunately was not so friendly, but overall with the sun & light offshore winds I was totally stoked. Best conditions in a little while.

Your mileage may vary.

Usually you have to be in the water to catch waves... Today was a great example. Looked crappy, ended up being some fun waist to head high shoulders. Super stoked, it's amazing what you can find at OB on the crappy looking days.

To the beautiful dark-haired girl that pulled up alone at 11 in a silver car, promptly pulled out a yellowed thruster, and charged OB alone: you rock. If you ever want a post session burrito, I'm buying.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but we found a small window of fun surf this AM. most of the beach looked pretty unsurfable, but we poked around looking for the best. Went out, wind died, things glassed off. Still fairly weak and gutless, but there were occasional shoulder high sets rolling through. Mostly drops & weak shoulders, but I connected one nice long right.

Dunno... I expected the worst and it was a lot better than that, so pretty stoked. Your mileage may vary - I heard it was a lot worse earlier, and it will probably be worse again soon...

Don't bother. Blown out SH waves/chop. Take out your bike or skate instead I'd say. After bobbing and paddling around in the chop managed to catch a couple, but I only went out because I was there and I needed the maintenance.

Yesterday evening the Jetty seemed like the only option for getting in the water and having a chance at some decent surf. It turned out to be alright with some fun size and occasional corners to work. Only a few folks in the water around sunset. Here are some shots.

Most of the beach was garbage but we found a fun spot with soft SH-HH waves. Some fun drops & small shoulders, sunny and almost windless. Given our expectations, it was stellar. Giving it a fair-, that's a 'spring rating'. Definitely worth it - we got lucky :-)

Trust Surfline. Don't drag yourself out of bed, drive west and hope for the best. If you make it that far, under no circumstances should you brave the warbly conditions and seemingly weak sets you find. Because what are the chances those waves actually have some push and shape, offering up fun drops and a few turns? No one else is out there anyways. So sleep in, nobody would blame you. Definitely not me.

It was definitely bigger than yesterday but the conditions were messier. The outside had some waist+ choppy sets but as the tide got higher they were barely breaking and left some crumbly windy wedgies on the inside. Was trying out my new 9'10" so I had fun.

It was "Take Your Daughter's Board to the Beach Day" today. I grabbed my 3 yr old's sponge, @fatnewt grabbed his 6 yr old's 3' pink soft top, 'Pinkie'. I had no fins & had never been on a sponge before, and the sponge was tiny. Still managed to launch myself in to some waist-chest high waves. Super fun for what it was.

Doesn't let you do poor-fair. Just me, a whale, a dophin using me as a fish herding backstop, and microdrizzlers. Grey whale about 100 yards out (wow) and dolphin's high-speed U-turn less than 10 feet in front of me were highlights - beats swmming at the Y!

Tiny Tasty Taters on Tap. Got up early and hit it with the loogie log. Old Jed Knoll that used to be 9' now 7 point something, with the weight of the Valdez, got me into waves a-plenty. Just hit two pastries from the box: apple and berry, and two pieces of bread as if the pastries were lonely. Yeah I'm a bad bad man for creating that menagerie, but whatever. I deserve it since I got up that early on a day of rest. So go surf, and then gain like a fat girl.

Went out pretty much at high tide and got what I expected. It looks to be shaping up now.

Pretty Inconsistent, most stuff wouldn't wall up and when it did, it tended to dump inside. Lots of happy teenagers and college-age folks though. And a veritable plethora of pigtailed Santa Cruz-looking girls. If you're, you know, into that.

Some mighty fine waves out there + epic weather. BUT, the lineup was a goddamn circus. 20 guys taking off on the same wave while 20 guys paddling back out. I literally ran someone over on a take off who for whatever reason decided not to duck dive. This prompted another surfer to yell at the guy I just ran over to watch the F out. Man, I love hot San Francisco days, but the beach scene turns into SoCal stylee.

Fair - / Poor +... Looked a bit more promising, but waves were sneaky & hard to track down. Conditions varied from soft & shoulder high to some throwing HH peaks. More waves on the inside, but plenty to be taken to the head as well.

All told, a good enough session. Had potential to be better, but really wasn't.

Went out at 10 AM and foolishly tried to paddle out in front of the pumphouse at low tide as there appeared to be some decent rights, which proved to be an illusion. You know it's not gonna be to nice when there's only 2 other people out at lindy. Got my ass kicked by the incoming high and the OH clean up close out sets in the shallow sand and got sat on the bottom a couple times. After I made it out, I went south where there were some waves to be caught but it was mostly a disorganized shit hole. Caught one real nice left though.

Size has bumped up for sure, but it's not any more organized than yesterday. Looked at it where the waves were OH, but I didn't have the time or the inclination to pay OBs gate fee to get out to 'em. Took the easier paddle on the smaller side and managed to line up a couple of HH lefts in addition to floppy closeouts. Nice warm day. No wind. No current. I say pick your spot and go paddle.

Sidewalk surfing the new pavement on 48 th is very good today (and every day). I didn't want to be that 37 year old guy on a skateboard, but I am and it's great. What took me so long, it's so awesome... And this Hess board. Wow. It's closer to surfing than I've ever felt on a skateboard.

We got some up-close-and-personal time with the sandbars as the tide was pretty low this morning. The wind was onshore, but there were a few (small) fun waves... Always worth a paddle at this spot. As @skullbone mentioned- super-clear water.

observed: a piece of driftwood that almost looked like a coffin. It wasn't, but this brought up an important hypothetical... if you're surfing with two friends on an empty beach and a coffin floats by, what do you do? Drag it to the beach and crack it open? Call the authorities? Push it westward? Discuss.
