poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

As if the buoy & wind readings didn't tell you already, let me attest that OB was knee to waist high (on the set waves) wind slop with stiff onshores this morning.

However - I was sick all last week and damned if I wasn't going to paddle out. Egged on by sticker, I took my low expectations into the water and damned if I didn't have a fun kookslop session. Lots of little pathetic (yet fun) rides. One of those days when you get out of the water, look back & think "damn did I just surf that crap?".

Bad bad bad conditions yet enjoyable session for me. Also didn't look like it was going to be any better tomorrow...

Your mileage may vary.

Stopped at LM to survey the mess. Didn't look so hot. We took the scenic tour of the local backroads and found progressively better conditions as we meandered southward. Picked a good-enough spot and found a WH peeling right that kept on giving. Pretty fun!

Overcast, occasionally breezy. Nobody else in the water.

great surfing conditions at San Mateo - Other

SCRATCHYYYYYYY!!!!!!! I was the only guy out and there was a sole whale playing in the lineup. I couldn't believe my eyes, nor could I believe that I had gotten that close. I paddled over to it, and it ran away. Then sticker and this other guy showed up. We caught some blech waves but whatever, it's something to do, especially after a sleepless, perturbed night. I should have medicated but whatever I'm not like that. Sticker stuck around and a few minutes later we kept seeing bulbous buoyant barnacled bodies bobbing up and down, so I started to chase. Me and my bright ideas. We got to them and I shit you not, if we wanted to pet them, we could have. I was within ***10feet*** of a mother and her calf, but I decided to not touch them for fear of a breach due to spooking it. Absolutely amazing. Quite possibly the most amazing thing I've ever seen out there. I've seen whales before, but not that close. Contact made. Contact.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Really fun, bowly peaks in the CH-SH range. Pretty inconsistent, but the sets always provided 2-3 good, rippable waves. Not much crowd, but a good amount of current. The south swell + incoming tide made it hard to stay on the same peak. Water felt a few degrees warmer than normal but maybe it was the warm evening air. Once the tide came in it sort of killed the spot I was at, but even as I was changing i saw some good sets roll in and it made me wish I stayed out just a little longer.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

First I had a cup of tea, and then I got on the bike.

It was freeeezing pedaling out to OB this morning. I actually added a couple extra hills just to crank up the body heat, because apparently arm warmers + leg warmers were not enough to battle the gloom. Srsly cold. Ugh.

I arrived at $STREET[0] at 6 AM at high tide. The wind was blowing something fierce and the waves were flooded. Nothing to surf, nobody trying. I pedaled up to $STREET[1] instead because I saw a solitary surfer paddle out there. He knew something I did not, which is that it was breaking in one little spot on the outside. I've never surfed $STREET[1] before. It was alright but the current pulled me out of the spot 3x before I gave up.

Anyhow, the falling tide shut that spot down and I pedaled down to $STREET[0], still suited up, to find that the wind had stopped and some nice little rollers had formed. 2-3 people were working it. I joined them and feasted on tasty bites.

As I left, per usual, it was shaping up, gaining size and a bunch of surfers were arriving. It's getting sunny. Probably be great!

I earned my breakfast.

Also: biking in a wetsuit is funny. Go REALLY slow!

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

OLB was going off today! Screaming and threatening to run a dude over in the lineup and getting shit talked in the lot. Hilarity. Homie needs a deep tissue massage and a few xanax real bad. Anyhow, the lot peaks were packed, but there were some fun uncrowded ones a few minutes up the beach. Shoulder highish with a few head high ones on rare sets. Soft as usual, but not closing out. OB looked fog locked and kinda hacked by afternoon, but Linda stayed close to glassy, sunny, and hot. No complaints.

Good times this morning! I was in from 7-8:15'ish. Found a solid rip that made for a dry hair paddle out which otherwise would have been a paddle fest. Pretty Clean, solid, focused peaks with some power...I thought I was at OB. Boomy Drops but fast shoulders. Some closeouts but hey it is Lindy. After a good rocking I went south to round out the session with some ego boosters.

Very nice today, a whale spotting, a dolphin reconnoiter, and a dragonfly pretending to be a parrot. Oh yeah there were some nice shoulder to head tasties for the taking too. Clean, but a little spring mixy, but it's May 10, so I'm not expecting much :) Go get some whilst you can. I may go out later too for the double, depending on the wind.

I got an early start on the morning, took a peek and passed on SMLM. I headed south toward one of the off-the-grid spots which looked good enough to give a taste-test. The waves were CH, heavy, and pounding./dredging right a the edge of a sandbar. I had my ass served back to me on a paper plate. Decided to trek back up toward LM and paddle off the shame. To my surprise, I found a nice glassy WH peeling left. The fog even cleared and let the sun come out. Pretty damn fun.

Small fun in the sun. Found a peak that was breaking and paddled out at low tide. Few others out too. No wind, clear, and a nice respite from the howling of late. I wish there was more pulse, but I'll take the tiny clarity over victory at sea. Bring logs and or volume, or just drop later :) That's what I did. Also, yesterday someone stole my goddam sandals at the beach. Unattended doesn't mean unwanted. *FIST SHAKE AT SKY*

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Considering how crappy the conditions have been + great weather = surf day. CH-SH+, crumblers with no real organization or consistency. Every once in awhile a nice nugget would stand up. I went on the high tide, which i think helped smooth things out compared to this morning's surf check. Both the winds and the crowds are light. Only complaint is that I hadn't been in the water in weeks and I started to develop noodle arms just after 45 minutes. Time to head back to the beach to get some sun and c h i l l.

Started on the west side in the AM, but there wasn't much action. So I took off for a more pleasurable spot in the PM, with long fun WH-SH rights for the longboard.

It's so damn nice out it's a shame that SFOB is still sloppy jo-loppy. Poor shape...SH-HH waves breaking all over the place. Still pretty windy (I'm over this freakin' wind). Saw two guys out the entire stretch of the beach. At some parts of the beach the inside looked kind of fun to body surf. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Highway to the danger zone. Some of the worst board ditching and body flailing I've ever seen was going down out there this morning. TOTAL SHIT SHOW. Multiple collisions, double to triple burns, and a large pack of clueless guys on big, hospitalizing boards. Pretty sketchy in regards to saftey. Definitely some fun spring style shoulder high lefts running for a while if you found a way through the shooting gallery gauntlet. Loving the frat boy sponge crew in the lot. One fella put his suit on backwards.

Pretty windy down here. Found a spot that should have been totally blown-out, but wasn't. Plenty of chop, but there were waves. Shifty. Larger sets were SH (and remember I'm a giant, that might be HH to you). Worth the paddle.

Sun, whale spouts in the distance. No human beings in the water ('cept me).

Pretty onshore, hacked up and sucky, highway closed (again), but found a 'reasonably' smooth stretch of ocean and caught a few small semi-nugs. Crowds were NOT an issue (joke) - came out of the water more stoked than most SC sesh's. Glad I paddled out.

Nice morning out there, mostly sunny skyes with almost no wind. Things started a little slow but got better with the dropping tide after 9, SH+ lines and only a few guys on the lineup, long lulls but all in all a fun, glassy sesh.
Went to a surfshop and got a rip curl f-bomb 5/4 for 280$, double stoked

Millworks at around noon was tons of fun, the unorganized short period confusion got organized and for a while offered up some wedging overhead gems. Winds got light to nearly nothing. Went from poor to good...for a while.

haha I actually went out in the slop tonight. was pretty bad, but still nabbed a few fun corners here and there. right time + right equipment + trashy waves = ?? I won't say the location I have been going to lately, which has been a lot better, but i thought with the south wind and all lindy would be moderately fun. not too disappointed.

KH to WH wind chop. Fog rolled in right around 5pm. I sat and watched it for awhile and saw maybe 1 or 2 waves that looked surfable. Tide is still kind of high and it's doing that weird switch-over thing that isn't helping. Saw a few LB'ers snag a few, but all I have is a fish which I brought. Even with that, it would have been tough. Classic spring.

Much better than I thought the low tide would be. It's small, there are looooooong lulls, but with winds are southerly and things are clean. You're gonna want plenty of foam to cruise the soft thigh-waist high waves and the water's a rather funky brown so you're gonna want to avoid gulping any down. Fun enough for me, the whales took a pass and headed south.
