fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

OK - so I had a great session this AM, so you can take this with a grain of salt. And the 'fair' rating pertains to only one small section of the beach, because we saw pretty variable conditions. If you want to de-rate it, call it a fair-.

So - we found some genuinely nice waves out there today. It was intermittent and shifty, but there were semi-clean HH+ rights and lefts rolling through if you were patient & lucky. Multiple big fun drops & a few rights that connected up through the inside. Paddle unfortunately was not so friendly, but overall with the sun & light offshore winds I was totally stoked. Best conditions in a little while.

Your mileage may vary.

Opposite of yesterday: like the rat of the city OB was a bit tipsy this morning. N looked decent, but was actually crappy. However, there are some solid OH south swell front runners in the water. Just FYI...

Usually you have to be in the water to catch waves... Today was a great example. Looked crappy, ended up being some fun waist to head high shoulders. Super stoked, it's amazing what you can find at OB on the crappy looking days.

To the beautiful dark-haired girl that pulled up alone at 11 in a silver car, promptly pulled out a yellowed thruster, and charged OB alone: you rock. If you ever want a post session burrito, I'm buying.

poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but we found a small window of fun surf this AM. most of the beach looked pretty unsurfable, but we poked around looking for the best. Went out, wind died, things glassed off. Still fairly weak and gutless, but there were occasional shoulder high sets rolling through. Mostly drops & weak shoulders, but I connected one nice long right.

Dunno... I expected the worst and it was a lot better than that, so pretty stoked. Your mileage may vary - I heard it was a lot worse earlier, and it will probably be worse again soon...

Don't bother. Blown out SH waves/chop. Take out your bike or skate instead I'd say. After bobbing and paddling around in the chop managed to catch a couple, but I only went out because I was there and I needed the maintenance.

am tempted to give it a fair minus, but that would probably be too generous. Shoulder high dumpers, a couple small faces, much more fun than expected. Did not drive around too much this morning but found a nice little spot that was working better than anticipated. Stoked given expectations.

Most of the beach was garbage but we found a fun spot with soft SH-HH waves. Some fun drops & small shoulders, sunny and almost windless. Given our expectations, it was stellar. Giving it a fair-, that's a 'spring rating'. Definitely worth it - we got lucky :-)

Trust Surfline. Don't drag yourself out of bed, drive west and hope for the best. If you make it that far, under no circumstances should you brave the warbly conditions and seemingly weak sets you find. Because what are the chances those waves actually have some push and shape, offering up fun drops and a few turns? No one else is out there anyways. So sleep in, nobody would blame you. Definitely not me.

It was definitely bigger than yesterday but the conditions were messier. The outside had some waist+ choppy sets but as the tide got higher they were barely breaking and left some crumbly windy wedgies on the inside. Was trying out my new 9'10" so I had fun.

It was "Take Your Daughter's Board to the Beach Day" today. I had no fins & had never been on a sponge before, and the sponge was tiny. Still managed to launch myself in to some waist-chest high waves. Super fun for what it was.

Doesn't let you do poor-fair. Just me, a whale, a dophin using me as a fish herding backstop, and microdrizzlers. Grey whale about 100 yards out (wow) and dolphin's high-speed U-turn less than 10 feet in front of me were highlights - beats swmming at the Y!

Tiny Tasty Taters on Tap. Got up early and hit it with the loogie log. Old Jed Knoll that used to be 9' now 7 point something, with the weight of the Valdez, got me into waves a-plenty. Just hit two pastries from the box: apple and berry, and two pieces of bread as if the pastries were lonely. Yeah I'm a bad bad man for creating that menagerie, but whatever. I deserve it since I got up that early on a day of rest. So go surf, and then gain like a fat girl.

Pretty Inconsistent, most stuff wouldn't wall up and when it did, it tended to dump inside. Lots of happy teenagers and college-age folks though. And a veritable plethora of pigtailed Santa Cruz-looking girls. If you're, you know, into that.

Some mighty fine waves out there + epic weather. BUT, the lineup was a goddamn circus. 20 guys taking off on the same wave while 20 guys paddling back out. I literally ran someone over on a take off who for whatever reason decided not to duck dive. This prompted another surfer to yell at the guy I just ran over to watch the F out. Man, I love hot San Francisco days, but the beach scene turns into SoCal stylee.

Fair - / Poor +... Looked a bit more promising, but waves were sneaky & hard to track down. Conditions varied from soft & shoulder high to some throwing HH peaks. More waves on the inside, but plenty to be taken to the head as well.

Size has bumped up for sure, but it's not any more organized than yesterday. Looked at it where the waves were OH, but I didn't have the time or the inclination to pay OBs gate fee to get out to 'em. Took the easier paddle on the smaller side and managed to line up a couple of HH lefts in addition to floppy closeouts. Nice warm day. No wind. No current. I say pick your spot and go paddle.

good surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Wind was under control and the ONE peak at the beach was kinda working with the right foam. Some fun, some dolphins, and some Obama Surf Team Thursday action. Junior execs stayed home as they were hustling towards the weekend; That's why it was pretty good: The right people were out under the right conditions. I'm pretty beat now even though I only surfed for about an hour and half. Wave after wave after wave of tiny tasty taters wears a guy out (this alliteration brought to you and mlanson by Swanson).
Anyway, it's good to steal away sometimes. BTW, the lot looks like freakin Arrakis now. Crazy.

Hmmmmmm not sure what to say about this morning. Dawn was super glassy. And there were shoulder high (ish) waves, just something was missing. Despite the 4 @ 15 reading I saw, things were pretty weak and gutless. Wish I had the longboard, though it was definitely shortboardable. Conditions pretty much stayed that way though the winds started picking up a bit & putting some texture on the water (though not killing it).

Still had a fairly enjoyable session. Perhaps a bit better than some of the crap we've been having recently, but nothing special. Missed the sun...

Im pretty sure a good portion of the SF surf community took a "long lunch" today. Sunny, calm, and peaky with mushy to occasional fun+ shoulders. Lots of stoke walking to the water (if you know what I mean) as well as in.

Who woulda thought you'd need a 4x4 to surf OB! Beautiful morning out there. Warm without even a breath of wind. The waves were doing what you would expect with primarily windswell, but I'll certainly take it. Mostly chest high where I was with waves that would give you a drop then mostly either close out or flatten out, especially as the morning tide started coming up. Some shoulders were out there, but I had a hard time lining 'em up. Bet it'll be a lot of fun on the afternoon low tide! Just remember, if you see a pile of sand if front of your car, don't slow down, step on it!

Still terrible spring kookslop at SFOB. But not getting blown up by terrorists or fertilizer made it wonderful. #stoked

The only thing that saves it from a poor- is the fact that it is marginally surfable... Make no mistake, it is bad. Waist to shoulder high gutless windswell closeouts.

In retrospect I should have taken more foam, and but really it is maintenance only.

Looking for the silver lining - calm, sunny, easy paddle.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Sunny warm morning with hardly even a hint of wind and pods of dolphins in the lineup. To me the water didn't seem any colder than its been the last few months, but of course that may have been because I spent just over 20 minutes paddling hard to break through to the outside. Waves were pretty disorganized at dawn and there was a moderate current. If I wasn't jonesing so badly, I probably wouldn't have bothered. When I came in, it looked like it might clean up, so if the wind holds off, maybe it'll get better.

8@11s at SFOB was as brutal as it sounds. 20 minute paddle, OH-1.5x, thick, & breaking everywhere I wasn't. S winds not helping.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Drove up and down the beach; conditions really varied from spot to spot, even within a relatively short distance. Finally, at 7am, settled on an area that looked decent.
Lots of mushburgers, but some sets breaking on the outside had some juice if you were in the right spot.
Funny how even on mellow days you gotta pay attention. I was screwing arond with my leash and a larger than typical set came through and I eneded up bouncing on the bottom. Thanks for that Miss OB, disher of humble pie.

So glad OB has stopped its imitation of Fall. Hacked, swamped, dumpy, closed out dribblers everywhere. Just awesome. Only thing missing was a vicious current, but maybe by now the ebb has picked up momentum so you may get a little of that too! I'm truly amazed I had all that epic surf to myself!

Clean HH OH. Calm by the time I got out. Lots of peaks. I'm giving it an extra bump because this was one of the few times when the waves seemed to come right to me and no one was around but the dolphins. Results may vary. Get it before the wind does!

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Overhead, clean and a whale.

Here's roughly what happened:

An animal briefly surfaces within 30 feet of the two surfers.
Me: What was that?
Mr. Shiver: That's a fucking whale!
Me: Nah, it's a dolphin.
Mr. S: No, it's a whale, I saw barnacles!
Me: Dolphins can have barnacles too dude.
[Animal surfaces again and it's clear this time that it is indeed a whale.]
Mr. S: I told you it was a fucking whale, let's go get it!
[Mr. S paddles off in pursuit of the whale, but although the whale is not travelling fast, he and his dolphin escort easily outswim Mr. S.]
Mr. S: Come back, come back!

LOLZ surfing with the shiver is never dull. Go "get" it? How does one "get" a whale when armed only with a wetsuit and surfboard? If one could "get" it, what would one do with it?

Anyway, fun times out there this morning in the rain. It improved as the tide and wind both dropped. Still looking good when I got out.

Blind paddle out into the misty fog this morning to find peaky HH-OH bowls. As the tide filled in it got better and smoother, but damn that current took me down the beach. There's definitely still some action out there and the winds are still calm. Fun+

Went to the post office during my lunch break and realized the winds were fairly light considering the norm lately. I never made it back to work and the dropping tide and building swell provided a sweet afternoon sesh. SH-HH+, with some OH nugz rolling through. Lots of sick lefts. The drops were pretty steep and had some chatter on the face, but if you got past the first section then the wave would peel all the way to the inside. The few guys that were out were stoked to the max, myself included. Yew!
