great surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Steamers Lane

Great time longboarding at Cowells Saturday from 10-3. Wind was blowing side-offshore in the morning and died down by noon. When I first got there I was 1 of 6 people in the water!? I guess people were waiting for the tide to drop even though it was still breaking and by noon there were the usual crowds. But everyone was catching waves and having a great time. I caught a bunch of half a minute plus rides. Waves were about chest high on the outside and waist on the inside. Loads of sun. Hard to beat for a longboard session.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Half Moon Bay

Some really nice chest high to head high waves on some sets. Lots of close out with a strong side shore wind, but the sun and the swell make it pretty darn fun.

I caught my last wave on my well loved Harbour 8'0" surfboard :( I caught a wonderful long chest high right that unfourtunatly jacked up and perled the nose into the sand Hard :( This was my first board so I am sad to see it done.

poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

It's a beautiful sunny morning at ocean beach with clear skies and a light wind out of the north. Conditions are similar to yesterday: we've got a fairly junky swell producing a mess on the inside bars with rideable shoulders on the outside. It's in the 2xOH range, and very shift and sectiony looking. It looks like a lot of work to hunt down a rideable shoulder. Overall it looks like a surf day, but perhaps OB isn't your best bet. Poor+

Surfing’s Next Generation Takes to the Air

Last spring, on a green wave in the Mentawais, a chain of islands off the west coast of Indonesia, Jordy Smith performed the most sublime aerial in the history of surfing, a back flip while spinning one and a half times. Video of the flip, known as a rodeo clown, went viral when Yahoo posted it in June.

West Coast And Hawaii Weekend Surf Forecast

There is still some good news in our North Pacific forecast…the storm-track still has enough energy for at least one more “winter-size” WNW-NW swell before really starting to close up shop. The storm that will be sending this swell is actually start to develop today but the main portion of swell generation is going to occur as the storm peaks late Saturday night and through Sunday morning.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

poor+ (circa 7 am) to fair+ (in between 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.). Rising tide cleaned it up, off shores groomed it up, and there was a magic half hour or so where every wave seemed ride able. the rain is steady. I heard more "oh yeahs!" than I have in a while. My best surf in March for sure.

We've got a nice morning with cloudy skies and offshore winds. There is a powerful 16-18s swell in the water producing waves in the 2xOH range. It's still a little mixed up looking, and the inside is mixed up and junky, creating challenging paddling. There are some bombs from time to time on the outside making it (maybe) look worth the effort. fair-

Sharks hamper search for California man who vanished while surfing

Fire rescue crews say tiger sharks are hampering their search for a missing surfer on Oahu's North Shore. They believe they spotted the California man's body off Papailoa Point Wednesday morning, but several sharks in the area prevented them from getting a closer look.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

I went for a few of those mid-beach close-outs that @lkilpatrick mentioned without too much glory. Paddled down toward boatdocks and found a gang of people working a nice waist-high wave. Lots of fun up there!

Overall, a beautiful morning. Would have opted for a post-session nap on the beach if I didn't have to knock things off the work to-do list. Should be a really nice afternoon on the beach though.

Finally recognized @hasbro as @hasbro. Howdy!

There are a few decent shoulders in the chest to head high range if you can be in the right spot. Closeouts as usual but low wind offshore and clean lined up conditions don't suck. I am paddling out.

poor surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

Dawn patrol sweep from LM to HMB this morning. LM had maybe 6 guys suiting up but the 2 guys who were already out there at 6:45 looked to be getting worked taking solid OH closeouts on the head with little reward to show for it.

Montara looked way better than I have seen it in a long time but there was nobody out. Burly DOH waves would occasionally peel for a nice left at the north end channel. The paddle out didn't look impossible.

HMB had too much tide with lots of reflections. 3 guys out and I didn't see a ride in the 10 minutes or so I was there.

poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Thursday morning brings us clear skies, light winds and surf in the 2xOH range. It's looking pretty ragged out there, with funky, sectiony surf breaking up and down the beach. The paddle looks pretty challenging and the surfing opportunities few and far between. If you are feeling really desperate you might find something to slide down, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Don't write off Baja just yet

Remember when we treated Baja like a suburb of Southern California, when you only had to point your compass south to quickly bask in sunny climes, otherworldly scenery and a tinge of the exotic? Then came the great drug wars, with the first gruesome headlines coming out of Tijuana. Suddenly, anyone contemplating a trip across the border was placed on suicide watch.

Over the years I've used spatulas, wax combs, random plastic, etc. but haven't found that perfect device. Maybe the Wax Buddy works (see video). Anyone use it? Anyone find something really effective?

First Aid and CPR classes

An earlier rant turned into a good discussion on CPR (http://stokereport.com/rant/blacks-surfer-comes-back-life).

I took a first-aid certification class ($50 bucks) at Bay Area RedCross and that was informative but it didn't cover CPR. But good overall material and they also have separate CPR classes (I think $65 bucks): http://bit.ly/9A7zCl (I think their site is down right now...?)
