Schaler from Surfline, your surf reporting is priceless...

The rest of the world looks at the Linda Mar cam at 7:20 this morning and sees looming 10-12 ft rollers pounding with a majestic ferocity. You? You see 4-6 ft. with occasional 8ft and "looking mostly closed out"

Director’s Cut: Inside 12 Miles North [video]

12 Miles North is about much more than the first documented African American surfer, Nick Gabaldon. 12 Miles North is about the human experience and how we individually construct Nick’s story as it relates to our own lives.

Bruce Irons surfs Teahupoo blindfolded [video]

“It could’ve been a clown car show in there,” says Tahitian photog Domenic Mosqueira, who shot the cover of Stab issue 56, which features Bruce Irons sitting in a crystal Teahupoo cave, eyes covered by a blindfold. “It’s really something to see someone that knowledgeable ride a wave, to see his hand in the face, reading it as if it was Braille. It was amazing to watch and it was ballsy.

How to Pack your Board Bag

There are a number of things that can go wrong on a surf trip: dysentery, flat spells, staph infections—the list goes on. But there’s nothing more disheartening than opening up your board bag upon arrival only to find that your boards have fallen victim to baggage handler malpractice.

Advice on Kauai?

I'm looking to get into some warm water for spring break with my wife. I'd love to find a spot on Kauai that has a good variety of breaks - my wife is halfheartedly trying to learn and I am an intermediate/sometimes-SFOB-capable surfer (not of the drop-in-on-everyone-show-up-only-on-sunny-days variety).

Ken 'Skindog' Collins + Surfline apologize for mis-post of ASP rant

I wrote a rant in frustration with the ASP and its confusing wildcards situation in Hawaii, and sent it to a private group. It was an attack on the ASP, not an attack on Hawaiians.

Anxiety is building at Half Moon Bay. A medium-sized NW swell is hitting the shores of California and the 2012 Mavericks Invitational may be called on, in the next days, if all weather conditions meet properly - wave face, tide, wind and wave period.

Small clean peaky fun. I'm surprised there's no reports yet from today...maybe everyone is recovering from the gnar this weekend? I didn't get out this weekend, so I definitely enjoyed the waves I got today. Seemed like the crowd around me did too. Sometimes it's easier to shine work than it is to shine family responsibilities. I think I'm the opposite of a weekend warrior at this point, purely due to being a dad, not cause I'm so bad, ha.

SFMOMA Gets Richard Serra's Taraval Beach -- A Work That's Built Into a Wall

In 1977, Richard Serra made an unexpected contribution to the Whitney Museum's Biennial exhibition. Instead of his well-known, large-scale steel sculptures, he offered a wall-size abstraction he called an "Installation Drawing." Serra did not pay homage to the Whitney's Upper East Side location, but rather looked to his childhood in San Francisco's Ocean Beach, calling it Tarava1 Beach.

Australia plans artificial waves to halt surf rage

Australia has 2.5 million recreative surfers and the surf industry generates $3.3 billion a year for the Gold Coast economy. That is why local authorities and Tourism representatives are planning to invest in artificial wave parks and surf pools that may boost the surf circus and reduce the increasing case of surf rage in the line-up.

Although it takes a certain breed to tackle Waimea at it’s most massive, the smaller sets have no shortage of surfers eager to prove themselves at the famed break. Photo: Noyle/SPL

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

SFOB fair++ Pretty fun out there, solid OH on the bigger sets (towards the smaller end of the beach), breaking top-to-bottom even on the high tide. The gusty offshores make for some interesting takeoffs--extra stroke or two definitely mandatory, and a few of those set waves seem to feather forever. What with the sun and the race and all, plenty of people walking around the beach--you'd almost think we lived in a beach town. In the words of rebecca black: fun fun fun fun.

Not SFOB but within an hour of it. Some great rides for those with skills. Paddle looked to be relatively easy compared to OB but that is easy to say from the shore. A little too fast and unforgiving for me. Plenty of guys getting shacked.

Surf Coaching: 8 Sessions In

Last July, I started working with a surf coach, Barry Green of Making the Drop. I began surfing late and want to get good before I'm too old, so I'd had in mind for some time that I'd like to get coaching to compress my learning curve. While there are many instructors available for beginners (heck, I could teach beginners), coaches at the intermediate level are harder to find.

No More Hawaii

Ben writes: I’d like to humbly submit an idea. It’s controversial, but it would send an important message to the world that surfing, aggressive localism, and violence should not mix. With that in mind, if I were the CEO of a big surf company I would halt investments in the North Shore for a few years until relationships between the visiting and hosting communities become more amicable.

Surfing often involves road-tripping, train-riding, camping and flying. En route to waves, or in between sessions, there's usually plenty of downtime. We talked to over half a dozen surfers - legends, shapers, competitors, and one living on a boat - to find out what they have on their reading lists and what they'd recommend.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Solid overhead pushing 2x. It takes a special snowflake to even try today. Being my usual self, I of course, was dismissive. Got out the 6'4 gringo thinking eh, no biggie.OK, biggie. Three mouseketeers put in where the crow flies, and after that it was a 6 bar full signal duck a l'orange slogfest. A few times we gave each other 'the look'. You know as you paddle out, and a huge folding meaty beast roars on the inside, and it makes you pause, and 'look' at your paddle partner in disbelief and dismay for confirmation. I even gave the roundup signal, but you know, stubborn me...never gives up a fight even if up against the ropes. So I pushed. And I got out. The next question is what now....I made it out, so now I have to actually DO something. I'm watching HUGE bombs just spray to the South. I see H20 in the pit to the South and I'm like 'wow, I'm glad I'm not there'. So my strategy to get back in was to get a tweener. Not a huge outlier bomb, but something imbetween in the pit. I move in and take the risk. Next thing I know I see a tweener building. Go time. Stand, yet I feel air...shit...then...thankfully board again...tha tha tha tha tha tha tha F YEAHHHHH!
