poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Surfline says "Fair to Good"... so everyone get up and go check it out like I did! As you will see it's going off with "A Frame" disorganized slop and "Barrels" of close out chunky mess on a "Beautiful" freezing sideshore morning. At least the sun's out and it's got size. Around Head and a half to DOH... But yeah the swell period is way too short and the waves too disorganized to be any good even when the wind switches offshore at times. Don't be fooled... don't even bother. I'm not... I did see a few people making a go of it and getting short rides.
But there are some crows chewing on a dead baby seal carcass in front of me so I'll take that as a sign.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

I don't really know how to rate it. Punishing paddle on the inside. Pretty clean and good earlier on the outside with DOH set waves every 5-10 min where I was. Slight breeze but practically still. Just me out there. Just waited for the biggest set waves and thankfully I was borrowing my housemates Mavs gun and it worked great... Got to drop in way earlier even on the chunky ones.
I want one for the big less than perfect days like today...
Unfortunately it got worse and worse so I called it a morning. Pretty fun bombs for a while!

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

I have a better time at Lindy's than the next guy b/c I have a longboard, enjoy offshore little peelers, and get along with "most" people who're out there. I enjoy surfing with the retirees.
But this morning went from a solid Fair+/Good- (for small wave longboarding standards) quickly detiorating to a Fair- or poor due to too many people on one peak and the tide started shutting it down. It was super dumb. And people got weirdly aggro. SUPers doing fine until it got congested with longboards and then having trouble weaving through. Dangerous at times but it wasn't anybody's fault specifically, just bad timing with too many people on one little peak.
The first 45min of my session were great though... lots of smiles... : )

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Mother OB: "Awww look poor little zurffy's trying to paddle out. C'mon little guy, c'mon you can you do it...
ooooh sorry."

zurffy: " ... but I really thought"... breath... "I was an okay paddler."
Mother OB: "think again little guy".

30 minutes later...

zurffy: "yes finally to the" .... breath... "outside. Hey that looks like a wave... oh sh.....
clobbered.... breath.... clobbered... breath... clobbered.
"oh forget it..."

That about sums it up. It's pretty glassy out there in the double overheadish range but... you know. Waves all over the place. If you have the energy, go for it. I didn't... oh well.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

It was pretty fun out there for a while. Surfed from about 9:30 to 11. It was about head and a half on the sets and really clean and glassy right when I first paddled out. Long bending wave faces over some great bars reminded me of a good point.
For some reason I got caught in this inside shore-pulling current that was hard to get past. Once to the outside it was glassy and super fun for about 45min with lots of space. Wind picked up out of the south a bit and looks way worse now...

... I think today was the last good day for a few.
What a January though!!

add on: @DD you can have any of my SFOB exploits

When will it stop...

After the last 14 days straight of offshore winds and surfable to great conditions at Ocean Beach, San Francisco, I'm asking the question: When will it stop?> My body is aching and I'm taking it for granted.
Today was amazing for me.
Best season ever?

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Welp I made it to the outside...
... I think it's getting bigger. Sets were around DOH plus and scattered. I surfed right before high tide and should've picked a more manageable spot on the beach b/c it was a little crazy. Big beautiful powerful A-frame waves glistening in the sun but I didn't appreciate it while just trying to stay alive and out of the impact zone which proved very difficult. THought I was, but I wasn't and got held under a while. Caught one meaty giant wall that almost came down on me twice but I was able to push through the back and my little 7'2'' didn't break. Needed a bigger board. It was intense. Please be careful out there!

good surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Ran out there as soon as I got home and surfed from 5:55-6:35 right out front. I wanted to be there for another one of those sunsets and although not quite as magnificent, I enjoyed being all alone in fun/big clean surf. Sets were peaky at a couple feet overhead with the rare bomb that I was trying to hunt down but didn't really happen with the current and lack of light. Still pretty amazing watching that orange glow reflect off the water. I'm giving it a good b/c I was all by myself and it was unexpectedly glassy during that sunset. Stoked to end the work week like that!

Was kinda fun on a log. The Bars are pretty bad right now though and it's super foggy... Surfed from about 1-3pm; Pretty clean and glassy but the waves had No push whatsoever and were pretty small and closing out.. Was about knee to thigh but I went up to the ###### and found a fun chest high left with a shortboarder. It was getting better right when I left.

Fair-
The swell jumped up a few notches over night but it's pretty disorganized. Looks to be about chest/shoulder high/Windswelly short little rides that I didn't see too many people getting after looking at it for a half an hour. It's a nice day out there with not a breath of wind and sunny skies. Happy September!

Swells picking up a bit. Fair- from 9-10. Conditions were good with side/offshore wind but the bars were not workin all that great; waves around waist stomach high that would fizzle out quickly or close out. Still occasional quick fun longboard rides and it Could get better as the tide drops a little, later.

A solid fair! It's small but it got clean. Bout knee high with waist high sets. I was out from about 11 -1 and it started getting cleaner and less crowded when I left. Best on a longboard but I had fun on my 7'0 thingy. If you're desperate it's the place to go.

Fair + this am... Started out at knee high and when I left there were shoulder to head high sets. Great consistent lefts where I was with the occasional small fast racey right. It's getting more crowded but it's not bad at all. Wind is still sideshore and not killing it yet. A log is the best choice. Have fun!!

It's Fair only in the right (or shall I say left) spot. Bring a Log and a warm suit. Fun loggable rides and pretty consistent at about Waist to stomach. That bar is good, weather not so much but it's pretty fun especially when your desperate. I got tons of waves this morning. But if you have time I think there's a lot of good waves up and down the coast now with this south swell. Yeehaw!

In case you all don't know this...
Wind alert is the best surfing app for SF surfers. Wind is obviously so important for spots around here. Knowing exactly what the wind is doing within 5 to 30 minutes and throughout the day is incredibly useful. It's an app made for wind/kite surfers but I love it.

The Jetty was Fairly fun. Chest to Head high with howling (and I do mean face burning screaming) sideshore wind. It was chaotic and pretty fun. Also pretty challenging. I had some fun drops with some decent turns and a quick kick out. When things lined up right I would see a giant pit of a barrel but I wasn't in the right place at the right time. It seemed to get better and bigger as the tide rose but I got cold and all the ripper kids came out and it got pretty crowded.
I still had a great time and I fulfilled my surfing urge for the day.

How's the Jetty

I know this is against protocol but I was just wondering if anyone's seen it today before I ditch work and head down. Is the wind blowing offshore/sideshore?
