Time to celebrate the passing of the great leader, fashion icon, and comedy legend that was Kim Jong Il. Location is still being confirmed by his dogs in Pyongyang but the early word is it will be right here in San Francisco tomorrow AM at his favorite secret spot you might call 'LivingWoman's'.

Paddled out by the contest site around 1 to check out the pros and see if I could snag some as well. They turned otherwise marginal HH+ waves into giant hacks, airs, and barrels. Ended up right by Gabriel Medina who was killing the left I was sitting on. Decided it was more fun to watch.

A low risk, low reward kind of morning out there. Lots of short length WH rides coming through at first light but it got pretty swamped out within an hour. Found myself toying with the inside shorepound for the last half hour. Logs might be able to have some fun out there still.

One of Linda's cousins twice-removed was kinda working early this morning. Anything HH or larger was basically shutting down but the in-between'ers would occasionally drain out on takeoff giving you some face time into the channels.

Not too bad at the jetty from 7-8. Clean, peaky SH sets rolling through every few minutes. Empty when I went out. Tide started slowing it down a bit as I was leaving but sets still coming through for the patient. About 4 guys out when I left.

Fair+/Good- about 1hr on either side of high tide this morning. After that, not so good. Size came way down since yesterday so there were some actual rides on offer. A nice right in particular. And some strange bright yellow ball in the sky that I haven't seen for awhile was emanating light and warmth.

Surfed from 6:45-8:15. Only person in the water for a solid 45 minutes at least. Dry hood paddle out. Pretty clean. 'Outer' bar was kinda working for a bit but got pretty soft fast and the current pulled me north through most of the peaks. Would have been nice for logging out there though. Moved to the inner bar given my board selection and got a few quick rides. Super mellow day out there.

Driving from LM through HMB saw most of the usual things closed out or not working well but there were a lot of spots breaking that I don't see very often so I'm sure if you've got time on your hands you can find something interesting. The word of the day is 'Explore'.

Luck of the draw at the jetty this morning. Progressively slowed down more as the tide built up but some decent HH+ rides could be had IF you were in the right spot. Just me and my buddy out for maybe an hour and then 3 more guys were heading out as we paddled in. Beautiful morning out there.

Less waves holding up today than the past couple of days. Much more of a mixed bag of size, shape, and quality. Maybe a little more tide will help but I wouldn't count on it. Still worth checking out if you need a surf.

Another fun one out there this morning. Seems like less waves to a set today but they're holding up pretty well when you pick the right one. A lot more peeps on it. The right I was on all morning got a bit overloaded by 8 as it fattened up a little making it fair game for the longboards to venture over from the left. Enough waves to go around though.

Saw at least one SR out there. Howdy Chris, how was that left working?

Pretty fun out at LM this morning. SH to OH depending on where you're at. A rare morning where I think there were more shortboards/fish out than longboards. A little lully between the sets but maybe a healthy 6-8 waves when they come through. Not too crowded, sunny, and warm-ish.

At 6:45 I was watching a few people already out deciding whether or not to head in and standing directly over the drain outlet at the pumphouse when guess what... the drain opened up and tons of pale yellow and not-so-great smelling 'fluid' started spilling out making a B-line for the ocean and the only break that seemed to be semi-working. I promptly headed back to the car. No dice for me. For those that don't mind the toilet funk, there might be a few waves to snag but looking pretty poor overall with most closing out or crumbly.

Dawn patrol LM & HMB. LM: Sets are closing out nearly end to end. In-betweeners are small/jumbled. A few people (as always) are still giving it a go. HMB: Maybe 1/10 waves actually have a shoulder to ride with help from 'The Bounce'. Waist to chest when it does happen. Better than LM early this AM.

I'm bracing myself for some backlash... but dropping into closeouts is mainly what's on tap early this AM at LM. If that's your bag, you can score big time. Parking lot was really crowded for dawn patrol which was slightly baffling given the lack of rideable waves. Guessing partly due to the 'Surfline effect' and/or the warmth and the sunshine outweighing the conditions. Looks like lunchtime would be the call if you can swing it.

I'll now preemptively congratulate those who caught good rides at dawn and I'll think about where to go this afternoon.

Fun time over by PP this afternoon. Did pre- and post-lunch session from 12-2 and 3-5:30. Looong waits between sets but they were clean and fun chest size when they came through. Sunny, warm, and the crowds died down for that second session even though the waves were better then. Would have rated it good if the waits weren't so long. Ready to start the week.

Land-only report taken at 4:45-5. Hoping to find some of the fun @zurffy mentioned earlier today. Unfortunately, instead I found lots of people out getting very uninspiring rides. I'd say 95% of the rides I saw were of the 'knee high mush riding for a board length or two straight towards shore' variety. Sorry for the anti-stoke nature of the report but thought I'd save people some time and fuel.

Continuing coverage of LM today... I think this is the 4th report of the day, the evening slot from 5-7:30. Wind died, crowds departed by 6 something, and there were fun waves holding up to the inside breaking at a few spots along the beach. Knee to waist high mostly. Some a little bigger but very infrequent. I caught a bunch of fun rights so no complaints from me. Tired & hungry. Time to eat some Vietnamese food.

Fair conditions from 5-7 tonight. Size is down a bit around knee to chest but that is translating to fewer closeouts. Sun was out but the wind was pretty strong side-shore until 6 and the crowds were up so you win some you lose some. Once again plenty of rides so a strong fair.

Poor+ this evening from 5:30-7:30. A bit of everything out there tonight. Closeouts, mush, and the occasional working shoulder. Mainly knee to chest size.

Conditions seemed to change by the minute in terms of what shoulders were working for what size wave and only one spot on the beach was fairly consistent so it was a bit crowded. Water seemed warmer than the air for a change and it was drizzling. Normally it would be a poor but enough waves were coming through and everyone seemed to be getting a few good rides.

Fair conditions from 5-7pm. Came back for a 2nd try tonight after hearing that some people had a good time this AM after I passed it up. It looked much better this afternoon/evening than in the morning. Many more shoulders to snag. It was really fun from 5-6 and less so from 6-7 due to the tide switching and more closeouts but the waves had some punch. The wind wasn't an issue at all, the water was still pretty warm, and light crowds - a solid fair.

Another fun post-work session today from 5:30-7:30. A little smaller than yesterday but still plenty of shoulders to catch. Lots of people out at first but there was a long lull around 6 or so and it seems like most people split and then it picked up again. Sunny, warm, no wind, pretty fun waves...good times.

Surprisingly fun after work session at LM today from 5:30-7. Knee to maybe chest high depending on where you were at and several shoulders were working on all but the biggest set waves. It was closing out more by the time I left due to the low tide but for awhile there it was nice.

Earthquake?

Apparently there was a minor 3.5(?) earthquake centered 3 miles out to sea from the zoo at 7:47. Just curious if anyone doing dawn patrol this morning at OB notice anything strange?

Surfed west side in the morning and east side in the afternoon. Fun waves everywhere, very warm and sunny, and I now have very tired arms. Places that picked up the S and SW swells were particularly fun. Looks like tomorrow should still be nice if you get the chance.

Fair+ yesterday evening from 5:30-7:30. Having been unimpressed with the AM conditions I crossed my fingers for a post-work session and was rewarded with several fun SH waves. When I first arrived at 4:45 it was blowing onshore and looking ragged but I said f*** it and suited up anyway. The LM gods rewrded my effort and the wind calmed switching side shore and the incoming high tide gave the waves good height and punch. Still some crossed up, warbly faces here and there but really fun and the best I've seen it for awhile.

Fair conditions. Surfed from 6:30-7:30 this morning. Waves are very clean in the waist to SH region depending on where you're at but are mostly closing out with 'some workable corners through the inside' due to the tide. Sunny and turning into quite a nice morning. Decent crowd was there already as I was leaving but scattered about the beach as it is breaking in several places.

First time out on a shortboard for me this morning and I caught two waves so I was happy. I didn't know what to expect exactly so catching anything was a surprise. What a different feel. Stoked!
