A stiff onshore is making a funked up mess of the head high to 1.5x overhead plus waves charging towards shore. Certain spots look doable, but overall it looks like a day where indulgence should triumph. Happy turkey day!

The Association of Surfing Professionals surprised many people this spring when it chose Ocean Beach in San Francisco for its premier surfing contest, which began this week. GoPro is ready to take action cameras to a whole new level. Again. The Half Moon Bay-based company just released the HD Hero2 Professional, a major refresh over the original (and much loved) HD Hero. Chief among the updates is a new video sensor that has twice the performance as the original including better low light capture. This new sensor is paired with a different lens that not only improves the overall clarity, but also features a 170 degree field of view rather than the 127 found in the older HD Hero. Yep, your extreme tomfoolery will look that much more awesome.

I snuck out of my conference a little early in the hope that I'd catch the start of the swell. Lady luck's peppermints sweetened my day. Warm water, head high + waves, frolicking dolphins, a beautiful sunset. A ton of fun out there. Clean A frames going right and racy walls of leftness. You can feel the new 12-14s energy. Stoked off my ass.

Conditions remain similar. Foggy, shoulder high. A bit more oomph than last night but still weak, intermittent, textured and shoulder high. Still plenty of fun to be had out there with the dolphins. Still, you might want to save your energy for what the next few days has in store. Sadly, I'll be going home.

Fun surfing with @gianmarcol this AM. Pretty crappy conditions but we caught plenty of shoulder high waves. Similar to the last couple of days. If you like to go bootie-less, watch out for the crabs. There are a bazillion out there in the thigh deep water. Nobody needs to see you squeal like a girl when one grabs your toes. I speak from experience.

Nice clean, fast, shapely waves on the outside. Churning whitewatery mess on the inside. Maybe 1.5x overhead on sets. Very consistent and a tricky paddle. Not recommended for rusty out of shape east coasters.

At first the stories hurt and I secretly wished for an end to the epic surf. Thankfully I've found a new peace with it all, and I'm once again, finding joy in the exploits of everyone at mother SFOB.

Sunny warm and offshore at sfob. The tide is going out quickly and there is a strong current to the south. Bigger set waves are breaking nicely on the outer bars. Maybe 3' over. With the current it's a little hit or miss lining up. I lucked out and scored big on a few. I love you lady ob. Stoked! What a great break from the east coast winter.

The swell has filled in quite a bit since yesterday afternoon and we're now looking at sets in the 3' overhead range. There is a light offshore wind and regular zippy peeling sets on offer. Some good rides and some carnage out there. The paddle doesn't look too bad where I'm standing. The sun is almost back out :)

Surfing in Winter A Leap of Faith

The sun had barely risen over Rockaway Beach, melting what was left of the overnight snow, when Noah Ward and Manny Huth waded into the Atlantic. The bitter December wind was dragging the temperature into the teens and blowing through their wetsuits. There were small sheets of ice forming on the r0cks.

No real swell in the water and blowing a gale. I might go out later just for the pure comedy factor. Anyway, suffice it to say that it's not a surf day at Ocean Beach.

It's another cold, crisp, stunning fall morning at Ocean Beach. The surf would be glorious if one ingredient were added. Swell. The waves are tiny and gutless. Bring some foam and you might be able to find something to work with. To be honest, I didn't see much in the way of rideable waves.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. The surf is always fun on thanksgiving and this year appears to be no exception. It's a beautiful morning with light offshore wind and there are nice, clean lines marching in towards shore. It's not very big, perhaps chest/shoulder high but well organized. Have fun.

It's a beautiful crisp, cold November morning at Ocean Beach. The surf has really cleaned up and we've got light offshore winds. Waves appear to be head high range and there are plenty of workable corners. It's not great, but it's better than we've seen for a while.

The good news is that conditions have cleaned up a lot since yesterday afternoon. The bad news is that it still sucks. Shoulder to head high, textured and junky. It's not completely unrideable but it's not looking very good at all. Future gull told me that the onshore winds are supposed to hold throughout the day, so I don't think things will improve much today.

We've got stormy conditions at Ocean Beach this morning. Blustery winds out the south and junky surf. It appears to be in the 1-1.5x overhead range and doesn't really look worth it. If the wind dies down, it could be fun, so keep an eye on conditions.
