fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

Any day you get to surf with whales is pretty darn okay in my book. They're about 200 yards off shore and spouting out their location. Fun to watch during the lulls. There were some flashes of fun with some waves linking up the reforms for longer rides. The bigger sets gave a little more to work with, but not much time before closing out or just flabbing out. Fairly sunny.

For awhile there, it was pretty fun. Amidst the closeouts were some nice, somewhat chubby, faces. As usual, the bigger end had more excitement. A little chop and wonk, but some good rides. Sunshine is trying to poke through, but it ain't happenin.

good surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

After spending a couple days beside a barrel (bucket), it was nice to spend a little time *in*side a barrel (sorta). Sunshine, OH and an easy paddle out was a nice way to be welcomed back after a nasty bout of food poisoning. Felt like I was gonna die at one point. Some soft ones and some hollow ones where I was. Not too crowded. Managed to actually paddle my weak ass into one of the hollow ones for that little cover up. Surfing cures. Superduperstoked.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

Some fun waves for a crowded Sunday morning. Although, while there were a lot of people, most of them were bunched in a couple of spots. I found a nice takeoff that was delivering some peeling rights that sure looked like they were going to be lefts, but went right anyway and linked into a zippy reform that took me down the beach quite a ways. It only worked on the wave after the set wave, but I did get it a handful of times to call it consistent for SMLM. WH, maybe CH. Water was really clear. Last year at this time it was the gurchy color of mustard, if I remember correctly.

poor surfing conditions at San Mateo - Half Moon Bay

Picked off some okay KH-WH stuff. Not a whole lot of consistency. Low expectations helped me out quite a bit and the sunshine helped, too. Some dipshit tied their dog to a rock or a log on shore and the poor confused pup got loose and was running all over the highway. Cars stopping with me trying to grab it. A guy helped catch the dog and someone alerted the dude in the water. He paddled in to get the poor thing. Kook move, dude. Not cool. Other than that, I had a Fair minus time in Poor plus conditions.

WH maybe CH on the bigger ones. Mostly closies, but there are some good ones out there. Hunted down a left all to myself that held up for some decent rides in between the drop and wash. After 10 days outta the water, it was pretty fun stuff. Really easy take offs and not much consequence made for a good day to test out the hurt parts. There's a crowd, but only on the one end. Explore a little.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

A couple of racy rights made my day. One where the wall held up for just a little longer than anything else I saw. The rest of my session was spent chasing that and I never did find it again. Tried committing to a left that was mostly closing out, but had some hope, and was ragdolled over and over. A lot of drop and slosh and kooky rides, but I'll take those two racers for my score. The extra energy in the water warmed me up real quick with the extra paddling. Feeling pretty rinsed out. Nature's neti pot.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

It's like an old Laurel and Hardy movie when I take one of the longies out. Slam the nose into the side of the car. Now the tail is clanking into the garage door. That poor board does much better in the water than on land. There are some fun little waves out there. Some good long mellow rides. You can have success on a short and foamy shape as well as a long board. I'd suggest taking the biggest log and a twelver. Make sure to bring cans so you can store the crushed ones in your hood. The bigger board will make it easier to crush them. Sure there will be pressure dings, but by the 4th or 5th one, you wont care anymore. Crowded, but not as bad as I expected. Water is crystal clear. Tasty looking crabbies out there.

Closeouts with a few thwumpy closeouts mixed in where I was. Saw some pretty slow rides over in the smaller section. I wanted a few zippy quick ones and convinced myself I could will them into existence. Linda laughed at me and said use yer Iphone for Facetime chump.

A couple of longboarders were getting a few here and there over where they do that. But, the rest of the beach is a Choose Your Own Closeout Adventure. I picked my spot and tried to will it into some kind of a face or shoulder. It sorta worked. I got one right with something to work with and a few lefts that were racy and almost clean with a few ups and downs and out. Had to scratch and claw to get into them, but definitely worth it. For me anyway. A ton of unsatisfying drop and wash rides. Also had more toss and drops than I care to admit. Bottom line for me, it's my birthday and I was getting some fuqn waves no matter what. Sunshine and good vibe, I'm tossin in a plus. Bring patience and maybe a little extra foam.

Nice rainbow on the drive down to find sloppy, but surfable conditions. Saw Mr. Hasbro holding down his spot catching some rides, when most were not, as usual. Decided on a different location and was rewarded with crumble stumbles and wonky wipeouts on the drop. Did manage to squeak out a few decent rides that held up for a couple secs and that made it worth it. The handful of other junky rides were just cheap thrills.

CH and some larger, some smaller. Helluva morning for me. Nice smooth drops into a right that delivered some face time to do some things. Or *try* to do some things, in my case. The left was a bit washy, but also had it's moments. Interesting lineup. The swirl effect kept everyone moving in a disorganized, yet somehow organized way. Sun poked through. Good times.

I had to sit out the last 3 days, so I don't know if it's as good, but it sure is fun out there. Boards of all shapes and sizes collecting at the appropriate waves. Some snappy spots and some flabby spots. You might need more foam, or maybe less depending on where you sit and what you want.

Overheard upon getting to the lineup: "I told them you'd be out here. But, I told them you'd be on your surfboard. Not that." The sponging teenager replied, "But Mah-awwm, it was barreling. I'd rather get shacked than do a few snaps." Disappointed mom paddled away leaving son to ponder his choices. He seemed content. WH to CH fun waves that gave a little bit of a walled face to zip across and then out before the wash. Lots of kelp to pull off the leash if you went too far. The tide was "Oh yeah, I forgot about those r0cks" low. Fairly glassy surface and the big glowing thing in the sky even poked through.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

SFOB delivering some soft serve and some tasty licks if you look in the right spots. I started on the cream puff stuff and drifted into a nice parlor serving some extra scoops with a little zip. CH and glassy for the most part. Looked like a little texture was occurring from a light wind as I left. But I could've just been telling myself that to feel better about going to work.

Glassy WH maybe CH on bigger ones. Lotsa closeouts, of course. But a few held up fairly nicely to make it fun. Really gotta race down the line to stay on it or its whitewash time. The sunshine was a welcome surprise. Happy Labor Day weekend folks.

Sunshine and CH closeouts where I was. The other part of SMLM had what looked to be some KH logtacular fun at times. I opted for the cheap thrill -- drop, up and out. A section here and there to play with. Some good speed on the drop, which made it fun. Waay better than yesterday and so far, no Drama Shark. Wish I had time to drive further. I'm betting it's a good day.

poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Still a little groggy from the glasses of fundraiser, found some CH slop that was fairly surfable. Northbound express was in full effect. After such a great day Tuesday ( http://stokereport.com/report/13640 ) when I came back in today, I saw a small dolphin (porpoise?) that washed ashore. A nice lady was standing over the poor thing on the phone. She waved me off, so I figured she knew what she was doing. Do you just call Animal Care and Control for something like that? Total bummer. If anyone knows more about the youngling's fate, please post. Damn circle of life.

Much of the Beach has some swampy conditions, but there are some snappy, but crowded peaks as well. I lucked out as one group was leaving and managed to scrape out a few nice ones. Once in awhile a nice big drop, too. Well, big for summer. Pretty stoked. I thought it was going to completely suck. Turned my frown upside down.

###### Localism. Found some WH fun waves this morning, but not without hassle. Was off to the side by myself enjoying flabby shoulders and some longer snappier rides along with some dribblers. But then, a group much much better than me rolled up on me and started snaking waves. I'm respectful, but not one to back down. I tried to trade waves, but they were unimpressed by my skills. There was almost a collision with two of them as I was paddling back out and tensions were high. They were like pros. So I finally just gave up and watched for a few minutes as one of them launched an air right next to my head just to let me know whose spot this is. I wasn't born here. I'm not a local. I get it. Fortunately, a school of sardines musta went by because the local crew swam off. I've had some fun with dolphins, but today was really f*cking cool. They were having fun with me. Probably laughing their asses off. Stoked.

poor surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

It doesn't look to great out there, but there are some fun ones that sneak up on you. Three days of Outside Lands made for some pretty bad surfing on my part, but then I seemed to pull it together just in time to be exhausted. Did manage to catch a couple waves that held up much to my surprise. Saw some guy taking advantage of some shore dump grabbing rail on a longie. Surfed it like a shortie. Nice.

Pretty sloppy out there, but it is surfable. Once in awhile, a thing resembling a face will pop up. Mostly, it's crumble and jumble. If you're into windswelly junky surf, SMLM's got it. Still glad I went, but if you have other things to do, you aren't missing much.

Pulled out the 10' log and took the gf to a very crowded (surprise!), but clean KH to set trim and "fly". Hadn't been on that board in about 4 years. After being in the water 20 minutes it seemed like the crowd wasn't as bad and we had a good time. Lots of smooth rides to do a little cross steppin and amuse yourself if you can deal with everyone. Sunshine and the smell of almost beef made it extra nice. Gotta go with poor plus because of the logjam.

Started off way over in Too-wallopy Meadows and managed to scrape out a few. Also got tossed and rinsed out quite a bit, too. Hiked over to a mellower trail and it was mostly drop and wash, but of a lesser variety. Couple clean ones, but basically more rinsing. Loved the fingers of fog on the hillside with sun shining. I'll take it.

Some bump, thump and dump by the time I got to the Beach. There were some stackers on the inside with some sweet drops. The wind is light, but is adding more texture. With some patience and good selection, there are some clean faces with just a little warble to make it interesting. Some really good rides for what I was expecting. It wasn't all victory as I got tossed a couple times to keep me honest. I was cheating and probably deserved those. Short paddle out. Glad I took my afternoon break, which coincidentally happened to run into quittin time. Funny how that works sometimes. Afternoon SFOB stoked.
