fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

OLB was going off today! Screaming and threatening to run a dude over in the lineup and getting shit talked in the lot. Hilarity. Homie needs a deep tissue massage and a few xanax real bad. Anyhow, the lot peaks were packed, but there were some fun uncrowded ones a few minutes up the beach. Shoulder highish with a few head high ones on rare sets. Soft as usual, but not closing out. OB looked fog locked and kinda hacked by afternoon, but Linda stayed close to glassy, sunny, and hot. No complaints.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

Highway to the danger zone. Some of the worst board ditching and body flailing I've ever seen was going down out there this morning. TOTAL SHIT SHOW. Multiple collisions, double to triple burns, and a large pack of clueless guys on big, hospitalizing boards. Pretty sketchy in regards to saftey. Definitely some fun spring style shoulder high lefts running for a while if you found a way through the shooting gallery gauntlet. Loving the frat boy sponge crew in the lot. One fella put his suit on backwards.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

It is April, right? I'll take it. Shoulder high with a few sets pushing towards head high. Real clean with subtle offies in the a.m. Got a few fun ones that lined up and allowed multiple turns. I couldn't find any, but I did see a couple elusive, small barrels. Definitely non-threatening and very user friendly, which in combination with the weekend and weather, brought out the crowds. The wind and tide switch started killing it around twelve or twelve thirty. Good times overall.

good surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Other

Woke up with a gut feeling that paid off. Headed down south to a spot that's normally reserved for logs. It took raging NW winds and a massive out of control swell and groomed it into blissful, overhead left walls that were lining up from way outside all the way into a shore break closeout. OB lateral pull paddle training came in handy due to a substantial southerly current. There were a few soft sections, but racing highways outweighed the slight jams. Barrels for those in the know. Yeah, there was a crowd, but I got plenty and everyone in the water was keeping it posi. Amped with jello arms and a burnt up face. Easily my best session of the new year.

Music Share - Guantanamo Baywatch [video]

I had the pleasure of playing a couple shows with this band from PDX in So Cal a few weeks back. Real good stuff. If you're into surf music, albeit this is heavily punk spliced, you might enjoy them. Check it out. Sound quality on this video's pretty much shit, but there's more out there if you feel inclined to search. I believe they are playing Thee Parkside this weekend.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

The ole' southerly wind safety bet. I caught it at high tide after work and had a decent time. The gromathon on the inner peak inspired me to paddle outside, where there was surprisingly hardly anyone sitting, and wait for sets. Inside was running in the waist to shoulder size with the outside pulling head high. Although there were a lot of super soft ones that required hops, there were definitely some fun lefts with lengthy (in terms of LM) speed sections into an oncoming right closeout. I generally tend to set my standards low when I paddle out at Linda. Today exceeded them.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Kinda fun out there tonight. Shoulder highish and nearly glassed. Pretty drained with a lot of odd, short period double ups and crosses. That being said, there were some fun zippers in the mix. Patience and being able to eye em' right helped. A few peaks were crowded, but there were plenty of empty areas as well. I didn't have to compete for a wave for the entire evening. The sunset and weather were righteous.

good surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Other

The local haunt looked like a little too much for me so south I went. Showed up and there were about four guys out. That number went to about forty within an hour. Even with the maxed tide things were fairly lined up and pounding, but there were easily connectable soft spots in between sections. Solid nine foot plus sets were coming through and tapping the edge of my at ease comfort level. Definitely took a couple walls to the dome. Gotta love those channels though. Tons of water moving around and tons of current. I'd call it good based on wave quality and consistency, although I struggled with a lot of paddling and competition and only managed four waves in a couple hours.

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Blah. It's not much fun out there. Sure, it's glassy and there's a little swell left, but it's just not really working. Soft and weird with the big tidal swing. Southerly current is pulling fairly strong. Might get better as the low continues draining out. Watch out for the longboard GoPro crew. They're obliviously burning and wasting the inconsistent sets.

good surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Other

That was one of the best sessions I've had in a while. Four turn waves can be hard to find in S.F. It was shoulder to head high with overhead sets, clean, and lined up for days. Crowded, but manageable. I picked off about six waves in an hour and half and even nabbed a couple sets. For Santa Cruz, I'd call that a high wave count. Really glad I made the drive...

The bigger end looked like a bit too much work for my epic hangover and 6'3. North I went. Shackelton's adventures. It was super clean and spraying back under offshores, head high to a foot or two over, crowded and barreling. The lulls made for an easyish paddle and a moderate northbound current cut up the pack. I had a really good time and my headache's gone. Lots of punch and a couple nice coverups.

Well, that was a nice way to spend my lunch. It's head highish, clean, and semi-consistent. Some of em' are walled and shutting down, but there's fast, smackable sections and potential barrels for those in the know and the right place. The paddle out was mellow, but the offshores are making it hard to get into some of em'. It's probably gonna turn to soft serve as the tide fills in.

It's weird out there, but there's redemption to be had. Head high plus with a lot of stacked, mixed up sloshage. I'd blame multiple swell angles and a storm close to shore. That being said, peaky bowls are jacking up here and there. Got a couple fun and steep lefts on my 45 minute lunch. I made it out in ten minutes, but it looks as though bad timing/luck and certain parts of the beach could present a difficult paddle. Weather's pleasant.

It looked really fun when I showed up. The outer bars were working at HH+ and it was glassed. Paddled out, got one, and then the tide started swamping it into sparse soft serve and eventually pretty much shut things down. I moved in to the inside and spent an hour hunting with minimal rewards. Things were mixed up and wonky. If the wind stays off it it'll be good once the tide drops this afternoon.

fair surfing conditions at San Mateo - Linda Mar

The beach looked kinda blown on the cams so I spent my lunch break my with Linda. There was definitely a bit more size than I expected today. However, as usual, shape was a bit of an issue. I surfed on the smaller end at one of the few spots that looked like it was working. Sets were shoulder high with some occasional head high ones in the mix as well. It was an all lefts scene where I was - mainly a drop in and race down the line into a closeout on the inside type of game, but kinda fun with some decent length rides here and there. The wind was going off and on from gusty southerly off shores to nearly glassy off while I was out. The dropping tide definitely isn't helping matters. Nothing like yesterday at OB, but no complaints.

good surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

That's more like it. Size is still lacking, but it's definitely up from yesterday. It was cleaner too, with less warble and a steady offshore breeze. I'd call it around waste to shoulder high. I got out around twelve thirty because the tidal switch and some rips started making things weird. I was surfing inside as the outer bars were looking rare and pretty soft. The crowds were off and on with the southerly lateral current doing a good job of mixing things up. Got some solid laughs from Grumplestilksin and McGrump the Hate Dog going at it via their logger yelling match. Full on Santa Cruz style. The day's pure Cali gold - warm and beautiful. Including a video of me on a small n' mellow left that my girlfriend shot. Forecast for this week looks promising...

fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

It's smallish, but there's some good runners out there. I nabbed a large wave count marked by some really fun racy high line sections, one entry-no-exit barrel, and a lil' shampoo. Bonus points for sun and dolphin dorsals scaring the shit outta some kid.

good surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Other

Monterey County - other- yesterday. Went on a lil' road trip and was pleasantly surprised to find super clean shoulder high runners with an occasional, rare head high set. Some long rides and some practice-worthy closeout barrels. Not a touch of wind and the clearest water I've ever seen in the state. Surfed til' the sun set; golden and shimmering. Fun times.

Crowded, fairly competitive, and inconsistent. That being said, there was a push and there wasn't any surface texture. Shoulder to head high with an occasional plus set. I mainly sat inside and picked off the smaller ones and swing sets.

Most of the beach is closed out, but I found a fun, uncrowded left. Conditions went from slow and bland to bowly takeoffs with a long and fast racy section into an inside closeout in the course of an hour. Chest to head high and pretty glassed. Almost wanna give it a good minus.

Pulled a quick check on my lunch break and quickly opted to run instead. It's a drained, chopped, closed out slop fest in the K to CH range depending on locale. Ninety precent drop and stop. A few folks making a go of it. I'm not exactly sure why. I overhead a dude in the lot claiming that Monday was the cleanest it had been in years. Someone needs delusion therapy...

A few fun and workable ones out there if you looked for the peaky, non-set closeouts. SH-HH on the larger end. Kinda stupid crowded with weekend warriors; lots of board flailing and outside SUP lurkers. Wind's picking up fast. I had fun taking my new 6'3 swallow tail out for its first spin. It's nice to have something loose and whipable again...

It's meager in terms of size, but it's near-glassy with decent corners for the patient and motivated. Could be a lot better or a lot worse.
fair surfing conditions at San Francisco - Ocean Beach

Surfed from about 10 til' noon. Cleanest early on. The wind was dicing it up a bit, it was semi-bumpy, the north pull was sorta harsh, and the peaks were kinda hard to track down or stay on. Running around chest to shoulder with a few head high sets. I was mainly getting drops to fizzles or sectiony shut downs. There were a few decent ones every now and again and I definitely saw a couple folks manage some longer rides with walled bits.

good surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Other

Made the trek south today. Started at ######. Clean with power lefts going HH to a couple feet over with occasional blood-pumper 9-10ft closeout sets. The entire lineup got cleaned up a couple times. It was good, but my bigger wave game was definitely off as I blew a takeoff or two and got caught behind sections. Moved into town and surfed 1st peak at Pleasure during the mid afternoon. Glassy and SH-HH with overhead sets. Tide was making things a bit bumpy and sectioned, but I managed to score a couple super fun long ones. Crowds were surprisingly moderate and without tension. Guess everyone down there's surfed out. We're gonna get ours up here real soon...

Biggest south I've ever seen at this particular spot. Solid overhead plus. Too bad it's washing out and super bumpy. If you aren't working I'd suggest heading further down the 1. I'd suspect some spots are absolutely going off.

While being vague, I'll say there's two peaks on the beach that are working well. The crowds are indicative. Everything else, even within instant eyeshot, is lackluster. That being said, those two peaks are kickin' out shoulder high plus jams. It's pretty clean as well. Happy huntin'.

fair surfing conditions at Santa Cruz - Other

Westside before lunch and Eastside after. Sunny n' warm. Got desperate after too long out of the water due to shit conditions up here and headed south. Lane was clean with SH - HH sets. Packed out with local domination on the outside. Definitely got burnt a couple times. One of such incident involved a set wave that I patiently and politely waited nearly an hour for. The burner in question paddled over after (and we're talking no kick out full with on acknowledgment of the situation for the entire wave until I was left pinched behind a section way on the inside) and offered up the apology of "sorry about that, I had just been waiting for so long" (20 minutes tops). Oh, Santa Cruz. So it goes. Eastside was glassy, smaller, and equally, if not more crowded. That being said, I did manage to pick off a few fun ones at both spots and after how frustrating things have been in the city and nearby lately, it felt good.

So, I learned on shortboards. I grew up skating and snowboarding and the transition just made sense that way. I've been surfing for a decent while now and have always been a naysayer when it came to discussions regarding the prospect of me on a longboard.

Super small and super soft, but my ultra floaty and wide 6'3 kept me up and moving. It was way down from yesterday (W-C at the beach's biggest parts), but still pretty clean with some long rides on tap if you're into cutting back and hopping through all through to the inside. Peaks are semi crowded, but I managed to nab a whole lotta waves today. With the nice weather in consideration, I'll take it without complaints.
