Chest high and super sunny at 1 pm. They were mostly doubling up on each other and flattening out but every so often a fun one would come through. Dolphins were out of control.

Luck, triceps, and widsom were necessary to get outside this morning, with an emphasis on the latter. Once out there it was nice for a while, with lots of dolphin wave-riding action. It didn't last for long as the tide made it first slopey and then completely soft. By the time I left you couldn't catch anything on a board smaller than an SUP. On the plus side the tide might have made the paddle a little easier. If you are going you'll find a bigger board a huge liability on the inside but a huge help on the outside. Good- when I got there and practically unridable when I left.

Witness the thickness. Solid groundswell on tap. The walls of inside whitewater hit you like a freight train. Less shape than yesterday but more power. Would give it a good+ for size and a fair+ for shape. Medium-strong S current. Be prepared for heavy waves.

The universe has been conspiring against me for the past couple of weeks to keep me out of the water but today I had my revenge. Saw one of the biggest most perfect waves breaking as a drove down the highway. Saw people getting big long ride after ride as I suited up. Found a channel half as wide as a football field and made it out no problems and within 2 minutes snagged one for myself. Waves were breaking like thunder with rainbows in the spray off the back. Lots of big boards and saw one snapped in half. Unfortunately it was softer, less consistent, and less clean by the time I left.

JetBlue waives board fees until Dec 17

I'm not affiliated with Jet Blue in any way. I was pleasantly surprised when traveling this Thanksgiving: I asked how much the board fee was and they told me it was free. The board counts as a regular "bag." So if you don't have another checked bag and cram all of your stuff into one of those rollies that you bring in the cabin, you wouldn't pay a dime since the first checked bag is free.

That was a pretty rad day - all-time surf session in the AM then watch Slater win his 11th world championship. I couldn't hear exactly what the scores were from near the surf but I think he was behind most of it and only pulled it off at the end. My big camera ran out of batteries so I had to use my backup little camera.

I'm not exactly what it was that sneaked this session into my list of all time favorites:

- a couple of feet overhead with zero wind
- super long rides
- sunny blue skies
- almost had it to myself at first
- when the pack arrived I had drifted with the current but ended up in a better place, still by myself
- looking down the beach at multiple near-perfect waves peeling off at once
- seeing other people getting soooo pitted (even though I myself did not manage to)
- squadrons of pelicans, flying through the wave troughs, buzzing over my head
- sea mammals playing around on the inside
- seeing a group of about 7 dolphins surfing a phat wave face together
- another large group of dolphins swimming among and underneath us
- heading over to VFWs afterwards to watch the pros wring more potential out of the waves than I could even mindsurf

It's surprisingly good despite the tide. Bumped up a notch in size since yesterday. Well OH on the outside, but spilling. Tending to close out closer to shore, but plenty to work with. Got some nice long rides. Heavenly blue skies and warm sunshine. Is this SF?

If you get lucky it will be better than it looks. The tide and wind are up and there's no more of the glassiness reported this morning. HH maybe slightly OH. They're not that steep but they can be long. Free involuntary rides to the zoo and beyond.

I was still fun until 1030 when I left. Blue skies, no wind, slightly textured water. Long, semi-carvable CH rides, with a wait between sets. Bring a board with volume and you'll be smiling.

Mid-morning it was windless under a gray sky with soft CH-SH sets coming through. Crowded in the water, and also had to dodge an event on Great Highway with silly people running themselves to exhaustion. I took a board I hadn't used in a long time and it was like hanging out with an old friend. Classic day at OB for me.

As I checked the cam I thought it looked like complete crap, but then Schaler's "Fair to Good Conditions" was peeking back at me in green from underneath the visual. Intrigued by this rare "Good" rating of LM, I overcame my cognitive dissonance ("Maybe Schaler can see it better than me from his cube in India") and raced down there.

Just as I thought, complete crap. The small end was about chest high with a flotilla of longboarders, some of them occasionally riding the whitewater in a horse stance. The big end only had a couple of takers and I saw them get rewarded for their efforts with overhead walls of whitewater exploding behind them after making the drop. The middle was closed out.

I checked several more spots that had plenty of thick solid power but no shape, and although I'm usually a "maintenance session, I'll practice my drops" kind of guy, I found myself doing something I almost never, ever do, getting back in my car and driving to work. Rush hour traffic this morning with the prospect of getting home earlier tonight to get a jump on my weekend was preferable to anything I saw out there (didn't check OB though).

One of my favorite "secret" spots was working today. Head high, sunny, and great waves for all kinds of gear. It looked ok from the shore and got better when I was out there. Every once in a while a perfect head high peeler would come through but I was never in the right place at the right time to catch one of those. Had plenty of other fun waves though. I suspect the high tide will start to shut it down. Stoked to have caught it this early in the season!

It was still good until about 11:30. There were a lot of spongebobs out there today, a couple of them riding dropknee and doing barrel rolls. It deteriorated fast and conditions weren't too inspiring as I left.

Other places had size but no shape so I chose Lindy. Alternating sun and fog. Plenty of size at one end if you want to practice big drops in the pre-season. Plenty of short little rides at the other.

The tide was too high at other spots so I settled for Lindy. Head high, no wind, sunny. Breaking slopey so bring a bigger board. Junky, but for 30 mins cleaned up and gave fast rides down the line.

Hypno Toad has been out of the water for couple of months. Hypno Toad got back in the water today. Taking the first hit of whitewater to the face, he thought to himself "I really used to do this shit everyday?"

Hypno Toad's arms aren't the honed instruments they once were, but his instincts are still there. Hypno Toad got pulled north along the beach and found some nice peaks along the way. He made his drops and did his turns. It was almost like he had never been away.

The waves were about chest high, looking like spillers but then throwing out. Hypno Toad saw people getting rides on all kinds of boards in those waves. He was on a mid-sized model, a new board he'd been wanting to try out for some time.

Hypno Toad was pretty tired by the end, but stoked to be back in the water.

Trusted Smurfline this morning against my better judgement. Drove far and wide and did not see anything worth getting wet for. The only people I saw out were a few longboarders at LM bobbing up and down in crumbly wind slop.

Completely wasted an hour of my day and didn't even get wet. I'll give Smurfline the benefit of the doubt though, since I've often seen it good at dawn and then much worse only an hour later.

Really clean, clear water. Really cold water. No shortage of sunshine. SH waves. Some decent, crumbly rides. The paddle wasn't long but it sucked to be inside. A short board was much better than a long board today.
