I dunno, man. I mean, it's really good to try different things, and alaias sound pretty cool conceptually, and from what little I know about him I like Tom Wegener, but articles like this make me worry a tiny bit. Maybe it's just the fact that the lead-in photo shows one of the heroes of the story clearly dropping in on someone.

Started out fair at around 10am, waist-chest high, but then it went downhill quickly as the size went out with the tide and the crowd and slop took their place. At least there were a few folks on SUPs sweeping the water and keeping the ocean clean.

Short morning session at the avenue. Super clean, soft, 2-3 feet, decent shape, but a very red tide. I almost couldn't see my board while sitting in the line-up. No one out except for a couple dolphins.

Paddled out at Kelly in the evening. For a high tide, it looked like decent shape from the shore, peaky and peeling, but the waves turned out to be mushy and lumpy, like really bad risotto. No wonder no one else was out.

Around noon, HMB was small and junky. Shorebreak provided a bunch of short lumpy rides, and I only had to share with a seal and some seagulls.

Evening surf check... Checked a couple spots and the surf was non-existent. Maybe 1-2 feet but wind destroyed it. The jetty was very clean but basically a lake. Didn't bother to try; at least I don't have to wash my wetsuit in the dark tonight...

Went out around noon, found some 1-3 foot waves that were mostly short-period lumpy and junky but occasionally good for a short ride, so poor+. The wind wasn't too bad and the water got almost glassy for minutes at a time. Saw dolphins *and* seals, oh my.

They're missing the latest model from Pentax which improves a bit on the one included in the article, as well as the recent one from Panasonic. Also, I have the Tough 8000 and while the image quality is definitely not great, it's not as bad as the article makes it out to be. (A modicum of Photoshop skill helps.) Still a good read though.

Pretty much wind-blown crud at most spots around 11am, not even kook-slop quality, but one or two spots were relatively clean and rippable 2-4 feet. The world famous OB current kept the weak paddlers (like me) out of the way.

Heavy sideshore winds tonight made for some heavily textured water that was still not too cold. 3 and 4-foot waves looked decent but turned out to be a little peaky and surprisingly soft. Really on the "meh" side of fair, although some folks got some nice rides.

South of the jetty this evening, 2-3 feet and clean. A little mushy so you had to be in the right spot, but there were shoulders to cry on out there. I, of course, managed to get caught inside and got sent to the beach by Mommy Nature.

Small but fun. You had to be patient and then your very own 3-foot peak would roll in and you'd be stoked. At the ###### some folks on their shortboards were ripping it up. I liked it because it was all lefts. I should mention that the wind picked up by the late morning.

Some stuff came through tonight if you were at the right south-facing spot. It came in spurts and the big bounce was in effect (you know what I'm talking about) but every now and then a real ripper came in. Too bad there were a ton of guys better than me perched on the take-off. I would've taken pictures but it was dark by the time I came in :)

Tried something new, hit up a curiously OB-like spot in HMB and conditions weren't all that bad, considering. Waist-chest high, light wind, decent shape sometimes, but I went out at high tide and apparently that's totally not the right time so there were a lot of bumps and lumps and chunks in the water. Saw some pretty good rides out there.

Low incoming tide, not much swell, the frankly brilliant weather brought out some crowds. If you were in the right spot, you could get some short rides. In other news, my 2009-model-year wetsuit tan is coming along nicely.

Well it wasn't really "fair" where I was sitting this evening (at Taco), but it looked fair-er with chest-high sets up at the ######, so I guess it averages out. It was super foggy and borderline raining, and did I mention how foggy it was? Not too cold though, oddly enough.

Swung by at 6pm for a looky-look. At Taco it was a mushy longboard wave but some shortboarders were getting some nice waist-chest high rides north of the toilets. Super cold and foggy.

Pretty tiny and low tide around 2pm, got a little bigger (3 feet) around 4pm. Side- and on-shore winds and short rides but sunny weather and uncrowded conditions meant a fun-ish day.

A westerly swell and at-times stiff off/side shore winds meant that the 3-5 foot closeouts at LM were particularly nice looking at around low tide today. There was a short left near the toilet and an inconsistent wedge up north, but a strong side current made sure that I, weak paddler that I am, missed most of it. Cold as !@#$ but still kinda-sorta fun.

Swung by Francis Beach in HMB on my way to the kook waves. It was close to 2x overhead and barreling, and I saw a couple guys get 5-second-plus tube rides. One guy got really deep, then the wave started to crumble, and a couple seconds later he zipped out of the end. Of course I didn't think to take a couple pics...

Princeton jetty, the spot of Kings: Mid-day high tide, knee to chest high, sunny, cold, almost non-existent wind, clean. Typical beginner-friendly close-outs on the south side and decent-looking shape next to the jetty, peeling but not quite barreling. Heard it was crowded at LM so I came here and had some fun. Saw a guy pig-dog a 3-foot-high barrel.

1230pm @ ######, dead low tide. Very fun small-size conditions for this borderline kooky beginner. 3-4 feet with some push and the occasional 5-footer, very light offshore wind, sunny. Looked bigger a bit further out but unlike Eddie, I did not go.
