Two soldiers and a civilian paramedic have been honored for helping a surfer who was attacked by a shark off the Monterey County coast.

Twenty-seven-year-old Eric Tarantino was surfing with friends off Marina State Beach on Oct. 29 when a 9-foot shark bit him on the neck and right forearm.

Diving just off Cat Island in the Bahamas, Russell Easton and his partner were taking snapshots of ocean life when Easton was approached by a 12-foot tiger shark. Easton began taking pictures of the shark with his camera that was packed inside waterproof housing and drew the shark’s attention.

Boxing Day at Blue Cliffs Beach, near Tuatapere in Southland, turned into a feeding frenzy, as a pod of orcas and a group of sharks clashed in the surf.

Eyewitness Tracy Thomas said it looked like the orcas, also known as killer whales, were hunting the sharks, with one wounded shark washing ashore with a bloody gash on its snout.

A surfer was bitten by a shark while surfing in New Smyrna Beach this week. The man, identified by authorities as 27-year-old Will Futato, was bitten about 12:30 p.m. Friday near the Beachway Avenue approach. Futato suffered a minor laceration to one of his ankles, was treated and released at the scene and continued surfing.

MONTEREY, Calif. - For the first time, a Monterey man attacked by a shark describes what it's like to come face-to-face with a great white.

"I just remember hearing a crunch, darkness and next thing I knew was in the water, underwater," says Eric Tarantino, shark attack victim. "Everything was quiet and I could see the shark."

Tarantino survived after a great white attacked him off the coast of Marina and plans to get back in the water before the new year.

The scars on Tarantino's arm and neck are almost healed but, memories of his frightening experience in the water remain.

"I got hit out of nowhere," says Tarantino. "I didn't see anything. It hit my arm. I don't know if I was resting or still paddling. It took me a second to realize what was going on."

SEASIDE, Ore. -- A woman was attacked by a shark near Seaside Tuesday morning but managed to make it to shore with the help of other surfers.

Several other surfers in the area said they saw a dorsal fin, heard a splash and then realized a female surfer was hurt around 9 a.m.

Montara State Beach — On August 3, 2011 Jeff Clark, professional surfer and surf shop owner, had been surfing at the S0uth end of Montara State Beach. It was 9:45 AM and he had been in the water for about 90 minutes. Air and water temperatures were estimated at 57 degrees Fahrenheit. The water was 10 feet deep over a sandy bottom with about 4 feet of visibility.
