Folks, I made some changes to the Karma system to be a bit fairer with the distribution of the love. I've also created a new rule that you need at least 20 karma points to vote.

This means that new users need to do some good stuff before they can vote.

Stokies, you may have noticed that StokeReport has been getting steadily slower over the last few months as traffic to the site has increased. I've just moved StokeReport from its original home to a new and much more powerful machine. Hopefully you'll see a big difference in page-load performance. You might also see some weird bugs.

We've seen a lot of traction with classifieds on StokeReport lately, which is great. But we've also seen a lot of (arguably) lame posts, without pictures or descriptions that just link to other sites like craigslist. I see them being voted down and wonder if readers are irritated by having them on the front page.

Buoy Data Flowing Again

We seem to have data flowing again from StokeReport's favorite Buoy. The swell visualization is looking healthy after an extended hiatus. The CDIP team reported yesterday (Jan 12): "Shore station installed to bring in HF data. Iridium still down." Sounds like progress to me.

The good folks at CDIP continue to have problems with a flapping satellite feed from their 142 Buoy. I've added a warning to the swell visualization that shows up if the data is stale, showing exactly how stale it is.

New Classified Functionality

Stokers, I had to sell my board, so I've added a new classified section to the site :)

If you create a classified ad, it will flow down the river on the front page and be available on the classifieds page for two weeks. The owner can close it at any time.

Traffic to stokereport has been steadily on the up-and-up and my poor server is simply overwhelmed. I've also trimmed down the location list to a set that there seems to be very broad agreement on.

I've noticed that people post quite a lot of video links in comments. I've added a new feature which automagically embeds the video directly in the comment when you do this. It supports about 150 different sites, including all the major ones. Please give it a try by commenting on this rant, and let me know what you think.

guys, a couple of years ago i had an idea for a site where people could share their love for surfing, by exchanging reports and articles. i created stokereport.com with a tagline of "share the love"

i wanted a site that was biased toward the positive, since so much of our daily interaction with each other, especially in the water, is biased the other way.
