Surf Coaching: 8 Sessions In

Last July, I started working with a surf coach, Barry Green of Making the Drop. I began surfing late and want to get good before I'm too old, so I'd had in mind for some time that I'd like to get coaching to compress my learning curve. While there are many instructors available for beginners (heck, I could teach beginners), coaches at the intermediate level are harder to find.

Watching a surf contest on TV is a far cry from seeing it in person, and the Nor Cal community deserves the opportunity to see with our own eyes the feats of the best male big wave riders in the world. I want to take in the big picture, watch the massive waves approaching, the surfers turning their guns and paddling into them, then the drop and ride, or brutal wipeout.

Actor Gerard Butler was rushed to hospital after escaping death in a surfing stunt, it was reported yesterday.

The 42-year-old British star was trapped underwater after being hit by a succession of waves while filming in California.

Leashless in a Santa Cruz

Yesterday afternoon at Capitola, when I was paddling back out, a longboarder wiped out ~25 feet ahead of me and I had to scramble out of the way of her rouge rogue surfboard (it was actually red). The board ended up near me so I caught and held it as she swam in. I asked "Did your leash break?" but she turned away and paddled off quickly, pretending not to have heard.

Lots of backwash bump from the high tide for dawn patrol at the Jetty. Still fun waist+ waves to be had, and not too cold (especially in my new 5/4 Hotline wetsuit).

The water this morning was like old tea with the leaves floating in it. And hunks of wood, water-logged planks, kelp floats and other debris big and small. The 4-5' waves had significantly cleaned up (in the other sense of the word) but were still a bit disorganized and shifty, with high-tide backwash. I lined up with the "Contaminated Water" sign and got a handful of rides in a short time before work.

Beautiful day for dawn patrol, sunny and glassy with shoulder-high waves. Second peak mostly closed out, main peak had more shoulders but quickly crowded up.
