I've decided to hold an arbitrary contest. Guess what -- you're in it. Well, you are if you happen to be out when there is some water moving around and there's a camera there to catch it. It occurred to me that last year we had a hands-down winner, despite there being no contest. Conscious Pilot looking good in 12' surf might be the best photo I've ever seen. I'm not alone.

This afternoon I decided to toss my GoPro up on the dashboard for a flight down the coast. It's not mounted on anything so it shakes, and the Youtube quality sucks... I have no idea how to export the edited footage in good HD -- I'm just fooling around with a new toy and have no clue what I'm doing. I figured I'd share just for kicks. Lots of untapped and empty surf out there.

Who doesn't love a good shorebreak video?

Watching folks caught under the lip diving for cover gave me a good laugh. Overwhelmed with Thanksgiving spirit, I figured I'd share. If you have your volume turned up, you can get aural confirmation that Clark Little is stoked out of his mind. Big surprise, I know.

Now that the tide has dropped it's quite a bit better than it was in the late morning. Lots of peaks which turn into short drops and ... well, that's about it. Some of the lefts are offering grom sized barrels but they're pretty infrequent. Slight side-shore breeze but it's still smooth. The crowd has largely gone home so there's room to move around and the longshore current (that was quite the bastard earlier) has stopped. Sun is still out. Birds are dive bombing. The paddle is easy. You've suited up for worse. We all have.

Fun. There's some size but it's really soft. There's a strong current pushing everyone towards Cowells. The current kept the crowd scattered and all in all there were more waves than people so there was no vibe. Friendly smiles, even. Sunshine and warm water. Hard to argue.

Filing this under Rockaway as it's the closest option. Pacifica Pier had glassy 8'+ today. Best I've ever seen it. Looks like sandbars are forming and it's working. Four takers. Was big but not pitching. Required a step up board or better. Glassy and clean.

###### of LM (extreme north) was firing off a fantastic left. Whoever the goofy footer was on the orange board didn't let any go to waste. That guy was killing it.

The whole video is worth watching. Pay special attention to 3:44 though. That's a Jedi Master in action. He just ducked death and kept on going, I think completely unaware of the horrible fate that passed inches above him. Crazy!

1:15 AM and I'm awake again. Yes, I realize that this site is about reporting -- not forecasting. I'm just guessing out loud and hoping that explaining my guesses helps somebody, somewhere. Teach a man how to fish, they say.

Currently the swell is 7' at 11 seconds at the buoy. Wind speed is about 10 knots from the NW.

From 10:00 to 12:00 it improved as the tide went out. By "improved" I mean it went from being more or less flat to more or less just closing out. 2-3'. If you're quick and lucky you might get a couple turns in. @atothek and I mostly just watched a group of folks who are surfing the point, where it's clearly going off. If you're looking for big lefts, bring a big board and enjoy the mile long paddle.

Surfed VFWs to ###### and didn't find much. Outer bar is just crumbling, and the inside bar is just slamming shut. On the upside, it's still offshore, sunny, there are people riding horses up and down the beach, and it's a super easy paddle. One duck dive to get out. Took more work to get back in, actually.

Gave mid-beach a shot for an hour. Paddled out with two other folks. One scored - the other two, not so much. Easy paddle, except don't take the first wave of the set as it's kind of stacked up a little and you'll be duck diving for a while to get back out. Just wait it out and you'll be out with dry hair. All in all it's pretty mellow. Saw some head high stuff with people on it but only saw waist high mush looking down. Roll the dice and give it a shot. Sunny and calm.

There are some fun smaller and softer workable shoulders but the problem is that in order to get them you've got to sit in the impact zone of the larger close outs. It's not terribly big -- chest to shoulder -- but there are some waves with a bit of power mixed in with the mush.

Sun's out, no wind, easy paddle. A couple people were getting lucky. The person in the pic was not one of them -- they backed off too late and whoops, over the falls you go!

South OB is offering two options at the moment. The outer bar is maybe a couple feet overhead and breaking without much enthusiasm. People are getting rides, but then it just dies out. Then the reform hits the inside bar where it jacks up and pitches out. You might get tubed, or ... you might get cremated. It's an even money bet.

The water is smooth but the swell seems disorganized. That, combined with a current heading north at a walking pace, means you need a bit of luck. It's sunny and warm and very light winds and light crowds.

Now for the good news! The fog that's camped out on top of Pacifica is nowhere to be seen at OB. It's sunny and warm and there's peaks up and down the beach. The waves look a little soft. Head high or so -- hard to tell while driving and so few people out. Wind is calm. Definitely looks like it's worth a paddle if you show up with with a little extra foam and slightly lowered expectations.

Fair+ with moderate offshore wind. Inconsistent, but 2-3' when it finally shows up. The wind was increasing when I left about 30 minutes ago making some of the takeoffs a little blinding, but I'd still recommend heading out to anyone who wants to surf anytime in the next 72 hours or so. The storm is definitely moving in and the clouds just keep getting darker and darker.
