Go surf Malibu. Not for the waves, but for a chance to visit the origin myth of surf culture. As in the book of Genesis, Malibu was once our Garden of Eden, until surfing’s original sin cast us out as the crowds swept in. Since then, the garden has grown decrepit, less perfect, overgrown with weeds and hoboes and traffic and dogshit and kooks on every manner of surf craft you can imagine.

On a Friday Evening in February of this year, at one of the most crowded North African Point breaks, twenty locals paddled out and respectfully but firmly approached the crowd of visiting surfers and told them: “We’re letting you know politely that only Moroccans are allowed on the peak tonight.” The implication was that the sanction would be enforced physically if necessary.

When I read on The Inertia this morning that “Zoltan Torkos lands potential $20k kickflip,” I was a little bit sick in my mouth. I honestly thought I had seen the last of Zoltan and his flapping around the flats. Now don’t get me wrong – this is not an attack on Mr. Torkos as such – he’s just a victim of Volcom’s shortsighted decision to endorse this anti-surfing behavior.

Not too long ago, I started art school in San Francisco. Since most of my boards etc. are home in L.A., I kept forgetting booties, a leash, or cold water wax. It’s such a bummer to get to the beach and realize I don’t have something I need! Especially when most surf shops aren’t open till 10 AM. I figured I can’t be the only one who’s constantly saying, “Dude, you got any wax?”

Zoltan Torkos is a man on a mission. Last March, Torkos landed the first documented kickflip in surfing and took home a cool $10K courtesy of Volcom’s Kickflipoff for his efforts. While the people appreciated his feat, Volcom upped the ante by offering to reward $20K for the first surfer to land a kickflip above the lip. An important distinction, no?
