Two soldiers and a civilian paramedic have been honored for helping a surfer who was attacked by a shark off the Monterey County coast.

Twenty-seven-year-old Eric Tarantino was surfing with friends off Marina State Beach on Oct. 29 when a 9-foot shark bit him on the neck and right forearm.

Dovi Kacev grew up in South Africa and San Diego. A longtime La Jolla surfer, Dovi is finishing up a joint SDSU-UC-Davis Ph.D. in Ecology. For the past eleven years, he has carried out research on shark ecology and conservation which has allowed him to study sharks in the wild in San Diego, Baja California, and the Caribbean.

Diving just off Cat Island in the Bahamas, Russell Easton and his partner were taking snapshots of ocean life when Easton was approached by a 12-foot tiger shark. Easton began taking pictures of the shark with his camera that was packed inside waterproof housing and drew the shark’s attention.

These incredible Greenland sharks can survive for more than 200 years at depths of up to 600 metres under Arctic ice. Bigger than the notorious great white, they grow to 23-feet long and are so fearsome they have even been known to eat polar bears.
